More road tax changes rolling in this year. Fuck knows why anyone would want to buy a new car these days when even EVs will be paying tax. Older vehicles can always expect a bit of a tax increase from inflation but 10% of zero is still zero Wink

One cheat code I've enjoyed for the last 10 years is zero road tax for a so called eco-engine car. If you can get by with an old banger to nip to the shops and not worried about ULEZ and the like consider getting one of these. Must be years 2001 ~ 2017:

Petrol/Hybrids: Toyota Pruis, Honda Jazz Hybrid
Petrol: Mitsubishi Mirage
Eco-Diesel: VW BlueMotion, Skoda GreenLine, SEAT Ecomotive, Peugeot/Citroen e-HDi, Ford ECOnetic, Smart FourTwo diesels

The crucial information to ask for is the CO2 per kilometre from the V5. It needs to be 99 or less for zero road tax. Personally I'd avoid the hybrids, too complicated. Diesels, correctly maintained, can last for hundreds of thousands of miles.

tl;dr buy old banger - no road tax, low insurance cost, make Greta cry Very Happy

Mate of mine has just started using a Triumph Dolomite as his daily driver. He's spent a fair wad getting it up to spec, all the bodywork done, chassis patched and properly painted so it wont rot. Suspension and running gear all renewed, engine refurbed, modern electrics, LED bulbs and suchlike. Basically better than new.

Still wasn't as expensive as a new car though, tax exempt, congestion charge exempt, MOT exempt, buttons for insurance. Also pretty cool, in a slightly lacklusture 70s nostalgia kind of a way.

Well yes, there is the vintage route but unless you want to roll up your shirt sleeves an early 2000s car is a lot easier. Yes, I've replaced brake pads, done oil changes, etc. myself but nothing really dramatic (translation: expensive, if your only option is to pay a mechanic to work on it). Maybe the fuel sender failure now I come to think of it.

Im totally confused over the new road tax costs. All this 'new cars pay x for the first year' etc. My shitbox pug has £0 road tax at the moment. I just want to know what change our wonderful masters are going to make to that.

The RAC attempt to explain it but I just recognised the 2001 to 2017 era my car sits in:

Nothing. Most things relating to the motor vehicle are basically never retroactively applied. Cars pre 2001 are still done on the <1.5l or >1.5l rule for example, and old cars wouldn't exist if emissions now were applied to vehicles that are 30 years old. I still don't need a fog light on my 1980 car, and No one requires working reverse lights unless their vehicle was registered post 2009. Bikes don't need more than one brake light switch (factory fitted, or just broken or otherwise) if used before 1986. Etc etc etc etc. All these requirements are applied to NEW vehicles from a specific date that the legislation was passed.

i got my wife an ford fiesta ecoboost 1l turbo 100hp 2015 just before covid. Zero road tax, 99polar bears emissions, so lower than the 100 starting point.

yes yes...wet belt.

But an ok car, modern enough, bluetooth, dab.

Got stolen, due to being the keyless version.

Now replaced with a corsa thats slower and has road tax of around 190gbp/yr I think.

I believe the sweet spot is a 2014 ecoboost...that still had a physical key for everything.

Yeah just don't get hit by a Rangie or Ford F-150 that seem to be more common here these days.

Side note, are men so insecure now that they have to buy these giant pickups or 4x4s? It's advertising your lack of big D energy gents. Especially the huuge american style pickups. Yeah, so you might be as fat as an American, but surely you're not as tasteless?

I was in B&Q for some ply a while back and some loser had one of those huge but useless
pick up things and he and his missus were struggling to fit what looked like some
shelving into it which wouldn't go inside nor into the undersized rear bed.
It looked like an early retirment/mid life crisis toy to me and was
neither of use nor ornament.

Ida kept my shit box van and pissed that money away on drugs and prostitutes like a real man me. Twisted Evil

My brother drives a fucking massive Ford Ranger. He's doing it 100% as taking the piss of the company vehicle tax rules. He has no need at all for a vehicle like that. It's still currently classed as a commercial vehicle for income tak purposes and so is capped at a maximum £500 benefit. He's actually already ordered a new one to arrive just before the rule changes that re-classifies them from a commercial vehicle comes in.

I suspect he'll move up to one of the pimped out vito vans with the hot engine after that.

I'm actually thinking about this from a slightly different view point. My daughter is turning 17 in July and desperate to get her driving test passed and get her own car (when she starts effing earning of course Rolling Eyes ).

I know at that age and for her first year the insurance will be ridiculous. Her friends drive around in little minimum size engine Micra's, Ka's, Corsa's and the like.
But I'm wondering if running costs will be cheaper if she gets an older more classic car i.e. an old Beetle, CV2 or something. She won't be doing loads of miles, and they are easy to work on.

Completely different to stupid me who bought a VW T5 Caravelle a few years ago without checking the tax costs first thinking it can't be a huge amount. So now paying out nearly £500 a year... Crying or Very sad

Same.. although my bro is in the Agri buiness so marginal use case*.

They will die on their arse I hope once the rule change is fully in place, and builders ives canno longer use them nn thwe school run. I hate them more than SUVs.

* although he previously managed with a Skoda Octavia Estate 4x4 'Scout' which was a great piece of kit.

There isn't much of an alternative for typical 3.5t farm towing where you want 4x4 and low range and ability to throw a dead sheep in the back.
That is what their original raison d'etre was.
About 20 years ago proper landrover defenders were best option but they turned into a yuppie accessory first and became unrealistic as working vehicles.

The new rules won't make much difference to typical farm buyer except since they are 40k plus new the number of three year old ones for half that coming up to use and abuse will drop off a cliff.
Usual sledgehammer to crack nut policy deployed.

BTW the UK pickups aren't actually much bigger than a lot of cars except a bit more sticks out the back.
They also do about 40mpg not towing, around 25mpg with loaded trailer.
A perfectly reasonable do-it-all vehicle if towing and load carrying is needed. but apparently it's better to be forced to buy a 'normal' car and 'something else' (not specified) for work

There is no rhyme or reason to it. Try some quotes with dummy details from a disposable email address and see what comes up. Comes down to what people claim for a lot much of the time.

Often something uttery shit boring that was fairly unpopular and rarely a choice of someone who really likes driving is a good bet.

Try a Nissan Almera as your starter for 10. They are dull as ditchwater and people rarely crash them. However they are also a Nissan and so are still likely to be working. Diesel Yaris would be my next pick.

Oh, and Kei cars, which seems perverse. I ran quotes for one of the 660 mitsubishi copens for one of my younger work colleagues and it was way cheaper to insure than a poverty spec fiesta, despite having a relatively high insurance group. I guess owners of them look after them and have few crashes so loading is lower. It would be a cool as fuck car for a teenager.

just do pls check if youre buying something old, occasionally the policies covering these old (cani say classic?) vehicles dont allow you to accrue no-claims-discount, ..because "going to a show in a field three times a year is not representative driving" and at such a young age she needs to start getting them numbers behind her ASAP

Agreed. I was also most annoyed after a year or two of a policy realising I had been given 'classic insurance', which is not something that was discussed on the phone or mentioned on-line. A lot of insurance companies don't understand that an old car doesn't mean that you want classic policy. You might just happen to have a 30 odd year old car as your only and every day car. These days though, with my age, the policies presented to me never change price and are often more expensive elsewhere anyway, so I normally just let them tick over- NCD or no NCD policy.

The oldest car I mentioned is 2001 - 24 years old - are such things being classified as "Classics"?

According to some insurance companies, 25+ they consider a classic. So when you take out insurance, ask them, or tell them, you want a normal policy, if you care about the NCD.

Not in this case. The woman from accounts needs her spending money from somewhere and the motorist is such a good target. Evil or Very Mad . Those sneaky Labour bastards have back dated it to cover my shit box Pug. OK, it's only gone up to £20 which is peanuts compared to some other vehicles (just don't own a big gas guzzler) but it's still a fcuking liberty. What did they say? We won't be making the working man worse off?!

Wheres Nobby? God, isn't it amazing how the left hide when their masters fuck everything up so bad.

I mean... Lifelong Tory voter here... Adding £20 to vehicle tax is hardly f*ing things up on the level of the last little tranche of Tory government. The amount we had to spend out during Covid (one small good thing that the last government did) we were ALWAYS going to need tax rises of one form or another.

Sorry, I think I was not really clear. I didn't mean to say tax wouldn't go up. Of course tax always goes up.
Before 2022ish tax increased 5-10 quid a year average in the pre-2001 tax brackets. If it didn't go up at all one year, then the next it was up £10. I'm still in that bracket so it still goes up. In 2017 I paid £150 for the car a year and by the time I need to pay tax early next year it will be £220. This is a 1.1litre, 50hp vehicle. I still have my old tax discs I dug out what they said I paid in say 2010 and it was £125. Cool

Your vehicle is already classed within a specific bracket, paying 0 or 5 or 20 quid it doesn't matter it can (and will) always go up. You gotta wait until it is 40 years old or just SORN and never drive the vehicle to get around this. I didn't mean tax in relation to my comment about retroactivity.

THe VED scheme is a complete nonsense.

My 2019 SEAt Leon 1.0 3 cylinder with 109 Polarbears is next year £195 . However it was registered between 2001 - 2017 it woud be only £20.

Meanwhile my Sprinter with GVW on regitration of 3.8 tons (even though it tips the scales at only 2.9 T) is £171. I could choose to downplate it to under 3.5 T which comes with the benefit of doing 70 mph and (much) cheaper ULEZ - should I enter a zone, but then VED jumps to £360.

Whomever worked this all out is a moron.

My builder friend has Iveco tipper truck can carry 2 tons and sort of ( Laughing ) needs a tachograph the tax is about £190 or was last year.
It's 14 plate same as my Isuzu pickup and that's about £340
They are both used for similar work and towing.
It's just grab grab grab. Both these vehicles are needed for work, if the idea is to force you to buy an electric mini or go on a non-existent bus instead it isn't a viable option
