I always love the people who talk about surviving nuclear war, they seem to think that they'll be able to come across clean water and food just like that, fuel for vehicles no problem (but no Nectar points), weapons and ammo easy peasy, they just cannot see how deluded they are

Afterwards all of the land and water will be radioactive so getting water and growing food will likely be impossible or inadvisable, and as for scavenging supermarkets, what you and every other survivor out there, you'd be lucky if it lasts for a few days or a week at most.

If we were warned about an incoming nuclear attack then the smart ones would be heading towards the blasts ... I'm more than happy to be vapourised if it ever happens, icing on cake would be to have a nice ciggie and/or joint just before it happens (nearly 4 years since I've had either)

Wouldn’t do anything except stay exactly where I live now…a militarily strategic island in the Eastern Mediterranean. Nukes unlikely here although there are other nearby “threats”.

Personally I'll be living far from the thankless urban sprawl, hidden in the hills hunting and fishing, bow, knife and spear, and occasionally painting myself with mud to go slithering into the dark pockets of crumbling urbanity under cover of darkness as they slumber to prey upon the weak and find edible sustenance (long pig a delicacy) and leaving my "mark", perhaps a head on a spike somewhere, so that when day breaks the villagers will know that He That Can Not Be Named has visited them, and may do so again, thus instilling a sense of fear and panic among the feeble ones still clinging to their shell of normality. And when I tire of reigning unnecessary terror upon them I shall simply hunt them for sport and make useful items from their bones and hides.

I lived with the prospect of bomb attacks in the UK well up into my 20s. When I was in the cadets, you couldn't wear your uniform to drill nights and you had to check under the minibus for bombs before setting off anywhere.

The IRA weren't amateurs pissing about with improvised household chemicals and pressure bombs like the current lot either. They were sophisticated bombs made with actual explosives detonated using timers or command wire systems because they had no appetite for blowing themselves up too.

They even realised the benefits of the propoganda aspect so they'd phone in and tell the police they'd set a bomb and where they'd put it. This caused almost as much disruption as detonating the thing.

They even blew up the hotel the Prime Minister was staying in.

How did we deal with it? By not letting the fuckers disrupt our lives.

I was doing courier work based out of London in the 1990's when they were still blowing shit up. The security around our dropoffs was mental.

A hotel bomb went off around the corner from me one afternoon. Brown trousers moment.

I was once accosted at Canary Wharf by some armed security with bomb sniffing dogs. They stood well back and pointed machine guns at me and demanded to know what was in my top box because the dogs were going mad. Turns out my chicken sandwich in the top box was the item in question.

I heard that one courier actually carried some kind of explosive device around for a while doing multidrops. Can't remember where he finally delivered to that it was found out. He wasn't pleased about it.

Living in a rural part of central Canada, everyone here is semi-self-sufficient. We hunt/fish and grow our own vegetable gardens, and only a few generations ago, at the beginning of the 20th century, settlers started off here in sod houses with a handful of livestock. My wife's family was still partly farming with horses and living with no utilities until the 1960s. Living without modern technology is still for now in living memory.

Unfortunately, with the US silo based ICBMs being located in Wyoming/Montana/North Dakota, projection models from ground dentations (hitting the buried silos rather than air burst) show massive amounts of fallout reaching all of central Canada.....

I still personally have 12 months worth of non-perishable food and enough firepower to outfit an entire platoon. Should last long enough before the radiation kills me...
