In the last few years I’ve been drawn into Auto-Jumbles by TV programmes like ‘Shed and Buried’ and my non-biker brother-in-law’s interest in the same. We’ve attended several Stratford-Upon-Avon racecourse shows, and the brilliant, massive Stafford Show this year. A year or two ago I popped into The Shuttleworth Collection (Old Warden near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire) which is reasonably local to me, and found they were hosting a motorcycle auction viewing day.

Now, last weekend I managed to attend an actual auction at Old Warden. As a novice I didn’t register to bid, I just observed, but there lots of old bikes I’d love to own and a couple of bikes I would have been particularly interested in; lot 540, a 1926 Levis 246cc 2-stroke that went for £3565 (too rich for me) and lot 625, a Gilera CX125 from 1993 (£4830, same). I’ve long had a fascination for the Tron-like Gilera although I know it was style over substance, and the interest in the Levi’s comes from attending The Banbury Run as a spectator this year and wondering if I could do that (a pre-1931-bikes reliability trial including a hairpin bend up the steep Sun Rising Hill).

Lot 560 was interesting, a zero miles, crated 2005 Honda CBR1000RR FireBlade. I expected it to ‘zing!’ but it was covered in dust and possibly oil, and it didn’t sell.

Oh, there was a woman on the desk I half-recognised and later remembered was Maria Costello, MBE, TT racer. Wub

Anyhow, which bike floats your boat, and at what price? The winning bids are shown.

Dunno if I'd want the bother of maintaining it but I wouldn't mind a spin on the Sunbeam. And what's with the tricycle? Only three left but it must be a bit "Ship of Theseus" by now.
