In the last few years I’ve been drawn into Auto-Jumbles by TV programmes like ‘Shed and Buried’ and my non-biker brother-in-law’s interest in the same. We’ve attended several Stratford-Upon-Avon racecourse shows, and the brilliant, massive Stafford Show this year. A year or two ago I popped into The Shuttleworth Collection (Old Warden near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire) which is reasonably local to me, and found they were hosting a motorcycle auction viewing day.
Now, last weekend I managed to attend an actual auction at Old Warden. As a novice I didn’t register to bid, I just observed, but there lots of old bikes I’d love to own and a couple of bikes I would have been particularly interested in; lot 540, a 1926 Levis 246cc 2-stroke that went for £3565 (too rich for me) and lot 625, a Gilera CX125 from 1993 (£4830, same). I’ve long had a fascination for the Tron-like Gilera although I know it was style over substance, and the interest in the Levi’s comes from attending The Banbury Run as a spectator this year and wondering if I could do that (a pre-1931-bikes reliability trial including a hairpin bend up the steep Sun Rising Hill).
Lot 560 was interesting, a zero miles, crated 2005 Honda CBR1000RR FireBlade. I expected it to ‘zing!’ but it was covered in dust and possibly oil, and it didn’t sell.
Oh, there was a woman on the desk I half-recognised and later remembered was Maria Costello, MBE, TT racer.
Anyhow, which bike floats your boat, and at what price? The winning bids are shown.

Yesterday The R1 took me to the annual Little Gransden Air and Car Show near Cambridge. It’s a lovely, all grass airfield with a posh village fete atmosphere augmented by splendid aircraft from the world class vintage collections and working museums nearby, and an eclectic car display.
I’ve been to the Little Gransden airshow three times now. The first time the parking was across a muddy grass field after days of heavy rain, the second was across a rough field of stubble, both dodgy on a road bike. When they emailed me a survey I suggested that they allocate specific bike parking on ‘hard standing’ and I mentioned that bike parks at such events are often an attraction in themselves. This year they adopted the suggestion (I got no credit) although it turned out the bike parking was in a field again, but just yards from the road and in behind the classic car show. Oddly it wasn’t an event that attracts many bikers and I eventually counted just six. Thinking the 2003 YZF-R1 (future classic?) was going to be an exhibit I cleaned it yesterday and shined it up. It had two new tyres this week so it was looking particularly good. I don’t think anyone there cared or even saw it.
Anyhow, after an excellent show I was behind a car on the field exit with a marshall standing on the long, straight country road ahead. The marshall waved, the car went right, I was indicating left but now I wasn’t sure what the marshall was doing, he wasn’t waving but was looking down the road while walking backwards to my left, potentially into my path. I wasn’t sure he was managing traffic and I hadn’t looked right so I should stop. Too late unfortunately; slow speed, turning and moving up onto the tarmac, when I braked of course the bike fell to the left. Ordinarily I’d have managed such a situation myself by reading the surface and looking for traffic but I had wrongly abdicated responsibility to the marshall. Luckily the bike fell onto the soft grass verge and no damage was done, not a scratch, but I was gently thrown off and rolled into a 4-foot ditch! You can see the hole in the last picture. Luckily it was dry. I clambered out and some other marshall’s/stewards helped me lift the bike up. After a few tries the bike started up, I gave a wave and I was off, only slightly embarrassed. I’ve got a slight pain in my left thigh/hip where I ‘managed’ the bike’s fall but no real harm done and some lessons re-learned.
My aeroplane photos weren’t great so here’s the bike park and a vintage Citroen from yesterday, and the road/gate in question photographed today when I returned to think about what I’d done.
