Went to investigate what I thought might have been a hot seizure some weeks back - I put it in neutral and coasted for a few hundred yards and it came back to life fine when I put it in gear and I just carried on and have been riding it since.
But obviously it was a seizure in the making from the gudgeon pin retaining clip breaking. Classic occurance, that I had yet to experience until this point. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Almot piston only 4k miles old. Used the gudeon and clips that came with it. I had to put this new one in as the old piston had a piston ring retaining pin recess into the piston allowing a ring to turn and get caught up in the exhaust port- thankfully little damage from that too.
Barrel is gouged but thankfully mostly only below the side/exhange port which is good. Might put another new piston in again. But cut the clip ends shorter to reduce likelihood of fatigue on the bend allowing the end to flex off. It's not rare for this to happen, i'm just disapointed. These sort of set backs continually seem to occur to me. Too many machines you see. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Tinkering with the Old Fella's Harley...
He couldn't get it to start this morning: press the button, click, thud and then the electrics died. Sounded expensive. Of course when I lay my hands on it the bike starts perfectly fine We had a natter about this and that, then he tried it again - click, thud, dead - but at least it was decent enough to do it in my presence
Whipped the seat off to check the battery, 12.7 volts not too bad, and the bike sprang to life again So we cleaned the terminals (after a slight argument with the alarm system) and I'm pretty confident it should be fine now.
As a bonus we also discovered the source of the buzzing @2,500rpm on my GT! A lot easier when you have an extra pair of hands to prod things. Turns out it's the clock mounts, I'll order the upgraded versions from Hitchcocks. ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Replaced O-ring for the idle air bypass screw on the 251's BVF 30N3 carb. Idle speed was a bit up and down depending on ambient temperatures. Do need to do a tune and balance the idle fuel screw adjustment and air screw adjustment after a ride but should be fine now hopefully after doing so. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Scrubbed down the chicken strips on my G310R up Mt. Hamilton road to the James Lick Observatory.

Still got about a 4mm strip; getting along in my effort to erase the Michelin Man off the tread, but the directional arrow is still virgin. That's probably about as far as I'm going to get on these tyres. Today was a really nice day for spirited riding, and the rubber was just about as hot and grippy as it's going to get. Sad thing about the Pilot Streets is that they last too damn long, and I'm too cheap to replace them as long as there is usable tread. Thinking about Metzler Sportec rubber next time around. I was considering a pair of Dunlop Mutants, but they have almost doubled in price in the last 12 months.

Checked tyre pressures before heading out on the GT. Back was fine but the front was down at least 10psi I have a little rechargeable tyre inflator and given its intended use is car tyres I had it back to the correct pressure in mere moments. Hmmm...
I head out, head back, check the pressure after the bike's cooled down a bit. Pressure in the front has not altered even a hair's breadth on my gauge I can only put it down to a highly localised time distortion given a few months ago my Husky had 10psi extra air seemingly from nowhere. Now we know: it came out of the GT ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

When was the last time you used the bike?
My cars and bikes, when simply sitting lose air- but when used constantly they don't seem to lose any air. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Probably a week or so. If both tyres were down a bit I'd not have even mentioned it. BTW tubed tyres on the GT. |
Yeah, most of the time it's one tyre over the other- normally the older tube (some of mine are decades old so no surprise the rubber gets porous). Sometimes i've come back to the bike after the day working and seen they've lost some since the ride into work ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

I went on my weekly commute to work for the first time and I have to say that I've been impressed with the small mods on the bike.
The Xitomer (Apex clones) clip-ons are absolute spot on. It's given me the right amount of wristiness that lets me know what that front end is doing. The Road 5 tyres turns in as good as any other sports tyre I've tried (S21s, M9RRs, Sportsmarts), but that weight over the front is something that's comfortingly familiar to me. No achy lumbar either.
The Eazigrip tank / knee grippers are a helluva lot nice than the stompgrip knobblies I've ran on previous bikes. Riding in kevlar jeans, you can comfortably grip and lock on to them with your thighs, which is an absolute godsend when riding 2 up. My daughter will love the fact that she can just use my back as a boogie board to brace against under heavy braking.
The Puig touring screen clone looks nicer than the stock screen. At its lowest setting, I didn't find the wind noise that bad when using my Shoei X Sprit 3. Will try to see if there's a discernable difference with my Arai Corsair X or HJC Rpha 11.
Given it was 6°C when I set off, I found the Oxfords HotGrips Pro Sports to be insanely hot in the medium setting. Hot was pretty much the same sensation as giving your boy lucifer a hand job on a cold Wednesday night in Stoke. Was wearing my Alpinestars GP Pro gloves, so they're not exactly cold weather gloves! That gives me some level of confidence for when winter comes around. Found them to be better than the original Oxford HotGrip Sports with the controller box.
Got to say that this bike is perfect for B-road blasting. The combination of suspension plushness, engine flexibility and now-sorted ergonomics means that I'll be picking up the keys to Megatron every time. I don't think I'll even bother with a decat bike since I don't think my local dyno guy/mechanic has the software to flash and map any exhaust mods. Plus, it's understatedly quiet, which means 7AM starts don't annoy the neighbours as much as a decatted R1 or choked out Fazer.
I sat on the R1 as I was wheeling the bikes around the garage and have to say that its days may be numbered. Everything felt so bloody stiff! The final thing I'm going to do to finish the bike off (on the cheap) is to stick some fly-eye perforrated dark vinyl over the indicators so that it takes away that orange bulb contrast. If I'm content with how it looks, I'll go with smoked LED front indicators, paired with an R&G touring tail tidy and indis when the time comes.
