It's new year, I'm a wee bit tipsy Wasted and YT is throwing up some classics, so I figured I would drunkenly post this question:

Who do you consider to be the greatest loss to the music industry to date (they must be dead, people that have lost their singing voice don't count).

Top of my list is Freddie Mercury, I know there are a lot of other common ones, but that's why I made this post

Nah. In my estimation Hendrix gave us all modern hard rock really - I am not a fan of the Beatles but I reckon he's nearly as influential as they were.

Whether he'd have continued to produce stuff that blew peoples minds, and whether any hypothetical later output would still be as influential is obviously debatable of course. I think the same might be true of Freddie Mercury. I think part of the reason he's such a legend is that he died just on the tail end of his prime. If he was to become a middle aged fat balding rocker along with the rest of Queen would they be as influential? Who knows but I would take a guess at no.

It has to be David Bowie. Love him or hate him he was both innovative and influential and producing brilliant music right up until his death.

On that basis he can be forgiven the cringingly bad "Dancing in the Streets" with Mick Jagger. Laughing

(I could hardly just sit here and parrot out Freddie Mercury, could I?)

"South AMEEERRICCAAAAA!" Laughing

I agree he's a legend but I think all the influence he was ever going to have was already expended. His death only increased the legend.

Hmm.. was that also about the time of Let's Dance and China Girl and Drummer Boy? All dreadful in comprision to his early work...

Oh god. I'd forgotten about the Bing/Bowie collaboration. It still wasn't as cringeworthy as Dancing in the Streets though.

China girl and Let's dance reflected his constant experimentation with changes of musical style and really weren't the worst of his work, but that's a subjective view of course as with all music Smile

I'm waiting for someone to bring up Laughing Gnome...

I think the influence of Sabbath as a whole can't be understated. How much of that was Ozzy? Would Ozzy have done anywhere near that on his own? No.

I think it's fair to say that Sabbath invented metal, and that's a huge deal but as I said, it's as a whole, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Ozzy.

I think I might have to switch genre right now, and say Keith Flint. Sure, he's not the creative drive behind the Prodigy, but The Prodigy reinvented themselves almost as much as Madonna, and each time they did they effectively invented a new genre whilst remaining quintessentially The Prodigy. There is no other musical act like them, and there will never be. The reason Keef is such a big deal is that The Prodigy is not the same now. It's missing something very special that Keef brought to the party. Possibly to reign in a little ego in Liam Howlett? (although he doesn't strike me as your usual egotistical rock star) Perhaps it's the connection to the audience? I went to see them live at the end of 2024, and it was really damn good, but it would have been more special had Keef been there. Poor guy. Plus he was REALLY into bikes and funded teams at the TT and the like.

Bowie for me. He was still making decent stuff when he popped his clogs.
For info, China Girl first appeared on Iggy Pop's The Idiot album in 1977. Bowie recorded it in 1983. Afaik they co wrote it, probably in a post-coital moment.
I rank Iggy's version the better of the two.
