Hi BCF,

I’m finding myself bike shopping again, and decided to ask for some viewpoints from those riders more experienced than me. I’m looking at the CBR250 (2011-2013) as my next potential steed. The bike I’m looking for needs to have the following:

• available to buy for under 2.5k
• easy to work on, reliable and cheaper to insure
• light enough for back lane fun
• short trips with a pillion
• able to take some luggage for potential light touring

The above mentioned bike looks like a great fit. Does anyone have any experience with this bike, or other suggestions that may be a good fit? I’m on A2.

Many Thanks!

Looks nice enough, but I hope you don't come across too many rice-puddings with their skin still on.

26BHP is about 1960s levels of power and this is 160 kg to boot. (BSA Starfire 25bhp/130kg, Honda's CBX250 form 1987 31/125 approx).Touring would be hard work, pillion trips to the shop probably OK.

That is true. I’ve also been tempted by the Kawasaki Z250SL too. The lack of weight and slim frame with around 28hp sounds like a hoot on the twisties. Not sure i would want to be pillion on that backseat of it for a long while though…

You can have one on an A2, they aren't *that* powerful. They are WAY better than the single cylinder CBR though.

I don't think there is anything *wrong* with the recent CBR250, but it's got sporting pretensions it doesn't deserve. You could just as well buy a YBR250, it'll have about the same performance.

Personally unless you've got a strict budget I'd go for a bike that makes the maximum A2 power out of the crate. If you want a sportsbike, I'd be looking at something like a KTM RC390 or maybe a Ninja 500. The Ninja also has sporting pretensions it doesn't deserve, but it does have a bit more power, and will not get boring quite as quickly.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

A2 up to 35kW and up to .2kW per kg, right? The Honda is less than 20 kW and about .12kw/kg. That's strictly A road commuter territory, great mpg but not much of an 'all-rounder' IMHO.
