So today (over the last week) I fitted a cheap AliExpress gear indicator to my TDM900, which didn't work.
I then used AI instructions to repeatedly try and fix it, moving the speed sensor connection to different places on different settings. It's now destined for the bin.
Conclusion:
1) AI likes to change it's instructions every time something doesn't work, making out you got it wrong in the first place, and responds in a patronising way when you point out it's clearly got something wrong.
2) Don't bother trying to use cheap Chinese gadgets unless you've got a LOT of spare time on your hands! ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.

More news on the Harley stuck brake light problem - the Breakout is Brake-on / Broke-on
Did some diagnosing. The right switch cluster that also has the front brake switch is CAN-bus. Mostly anything you press goes over data-wires except the kill switch which is separate. If you disconnect the right switch cluster you can't turn on the bike but if you turn on the bike, disconnect the switch and then hit the kill switch it still turns off... hope that makes sense
Anyhoo, with the switch cluster connected and the front brake pulled in (with the engine cold) the brake lights work as expected. If you hold the lever in and at the same time disconnect the switch cluster the brake lights go off. Conclusion: 'front brake on' is a continuous 'ON' signal to the BCM not explicit 'ON' and 'OFF' signals.
The Plan: wait for the Old Fella to come back from a long run tomorrow. Hopefully the bike comes back with the brake lights stuck on. If so, we disconnect the switch cluster and see if the lights go off. If they do, it's the switch cluster. If they don't, it's the BCM and ker-ching, take out a second mortgage and send it to a Harley dealer.
BTW, to get at the connector for the switch cluster means unbolting the fuel tank. At this point we could probably do it blindfolded ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Some solid progress with the Harley!
The Old Fella spotted a relatively cheap workshop diagnostics tablet on eBay that said it could do all sorts - module change, key programming, etc. - and who doesn't love another gadget Anyhoo, we fired it up and managed to get live data streams of various things including front brake switch, rear brake switch and brake light. As you work the lever/pedal you see them mirrored on the tablet screen. "Hang on, is that brake light stuck on?!" We looked at the screen and this time it said the rear was on
The rear brake switch is an inline hydraulic pressure switch. I went to disconnect it and the brake lights started flickering on and off. In the end we discovered wiggling the blades on the switch (not the connectors on the loom side) would activate the switch. Finally! An easily reproduceable problem, so we have a replacement heading over next day from Amazon for £17.
Will it solve the problem? I have a feeling there are overlapping issues here but the handy thing with this tablet is getting separate data streams. If the brake light stays on again we can query the BCM and right hand switch cluster in isolation and definitely get to the bottom of which one is at fault. ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Swapped back to the bar end mirrors that I'd installed previously. I'm a little bit, shall we say 'wide' and couldn't see a thing in all honesty from the Puig ones I'd installed.
Swapped back, and can see more from just one of these than I could from the Puig . ____________________ '90 TS50 > '04 Senda 125 > '91 ZXR400 > '90 CB-1 > '04 GSX-R1000 > '96 Bandit 600 > '89 ZXR750 H1 > '96 GSX-R750 SRAD > '98 RR-W Fireblade > '98 T595 Daytona > '03 Hornet 900 > '04 Fireblade > '16 GSX-S1000F (x2) > '23 XSR900 |
