I saw this and it reminded me recently of our own AI visitor 'twowheeledwonder'. I'm not sure why they needed to create a profile to trawl all the marvellous info on here but I'm sure that's what it was doing. Or maybe just testing us humanoids, as I see he/she/it has now fucked off.

So how do we lock down this valiuable data source against the AI bots, or don't we care?

AI will kill us?!! OMG!!! RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!!!!

This is what I think of such "news" stories...

https://media.tenor.com/-PMeSn20CnIAAAAM/jurassic-park-dr-malcolm.gif

They're generated by people who either want attention or as sly corporate advertising. The associated urinalists* are either immensely stupid or complicit.

LLMs are at best simulated partial intelligences that are missing too many key features to be considered sentient. They only have a short term memory (technical term: limited context) and no inherent ability to form long term memories. There are fixes for this but it's not the sort of memories we have as there's no concept of relevance and really you have to curate their long term memories for them. What they have in spades is the equivalent of wikipedia with bells on at their digital fingertips and the ability to search and infer things from such information at lightning speed. Nothing to be sniffed at to be sure but hardly T-800 territory.

They also don't have the concept of executive control or satisfaction of needs, this is because they lack embodiment. In other words, until the AIs are going down the pub after work, staggering out at closing time and pissing up against lamp posts, we have nothing to worry about Laughing

As to protecting the vital forum information, you can tweak the robots.txt file and add features like Cloudlfare's Super Bot Fighter but either would require Korn's attention.

*Giving them the title "Journalist" is taking the piss.

Well. An AI tried to set fire to my motorcycle.

It generated an ignition circuit diagram which would have created a dead short. It was very apologetic about it when I pointed it out.

It also suggested I buy corona cero beer when I searched for gluten free, zero alcohol beers so it's a good job I a) Don't trust it and b) Am only gluten intolerant and not coeliac. Again when I pointed out it was wrong and that the information it had provided could kill someone, it was most apologetic.

This has always been my take. It currently can only use the available data and cannot produce output through any kind of original thinking'
So no e=mc2 any time soon right?

twowheeledwanker initially seemed legit but soon became annoying.. I just hope this isn't a sign of things to come..

Yes, and it's only as good as the information it has, which is off the intenet, and the internet is full of shite.

Apocalypse by incompetence - it's a fair point. With automation (and LLMs will likely mean much more of it) human operators are relegated to a monitoring role, a task we're not really suited to.

And with regards to original thinking, they won't come out with a warp drive or anything momentous on their own but the people who would think up such things will be spending less time on boring stuff like writing proposals to ethnics boards or marking term papers.
