this has probably been posted before (not sure) but when im riding my bike i sometimes listen to me ipod, is this legal??? as it seems a bit of a grey area with conflicting views etc. I have it so i can still hear the traffic around me, so its not complelty blocking me hearing.

any thoughts on the subject??

I wouldn't use one whilst riding in an urban environment or doing short journeys, would definately use one on a long distance ride though, just keep the volume low enough to be able to hear outside noises.

Used like that wouldn't have thought there would be much difference from using earplugs.

I like to listen to music when riding, but it can get a bit awkward when I start conducting. Especially on corners.

I listen to music quite often now. Tried it a while ago, thought it was good, but also I could hear stuff around me, so it wasn't that bad. I just enjoy listening to the radio.

awj72, is that your bike in your avatar? Looks like an NSR250. Is it?

Been posted loads of times...

There's nothing Illegal about it - you have earpieces both on CBT and in your Exam.

I do it sometimes, but dont really have a decent player. Rode down the A34 last Thursday night singing Kum-Bi-Ah cuz I didn't have any music Rolling Eyes

I've listened to music before, i find it makes riding alot more enjoyable, I only put the 1 earpeice in so i can hear traffic etc - works very well i think, although its a pain in the ass to get the earpiece to stay in my ear when riding.

it's not like its any different from people listening to music in a car, infact its no where near as bad.

I've never tried it... mainly because I'm too worried it might make me ride more recklessly! (although I guess that depends what I choose to listen to...)

I do all the time and i found the perfect head phones for the job

https://www.unbeatable.co.uk/CatalogueItem_10135.html

They stay in and cut out a lot of the engine noise.

Even if I am not listening to music (dam batteries) I keep one earphone in or use earplugs anyway to keep the noise down.

Why one? Well I am deaf in one ear already and so a little paranoid about keeping the hearing I do have.

Considering that riding at 70+ the wind noise has the potential to damage your hearing considerably over extended periods of time, earplugs are a must if you intend to ride for several years and still keep your hearing.

Earplugs just a step up from this really, long as the music isnt so loud that it hurts your ears while your not moving (I.e little above normal listening volume) then it blocks out wind noise and keeps you busy.

I find that i can go long periods without hearing the music at all while its on, kind of a background noise while i am riding that i dont register, helps me concentrate if anything.

Flip side is the 'if its two loud you cant hear a car horn/sirens etc.

Answer to that is that dont have it loud enough so you cant hear others talking to you. And when your at high speeds you wouldnt be able to hear it anyway.

I dunno about the whole 'rock music makes me go faster' idea, doesnt make much difference in my opinion. Its still the rider who has a lack of self control if they begin to thrash the bike when fast paced music comes on. Just dont change the way you ride based on your music and you'll be fine.

I'm half deaf too, so which ear do you have the music in? (And yes, I know that sounds like a daft question!) Do you put it in the one with bad hearing, just for background, thereby saving the hearing in your 'good' ear. Or in the good one and thereby partially blocking out the sound of engines, sirens other traffic etc?

Just wondering as I'd like to get an MP3 player but wondering whether its a good idea being half deaf and blocking out other sounds in my good side. Confused Rolling Eyes Smile

I am 100% deaf on my right side you could have a small war going of in there and i wouldn’t hear it.

So I always have the earphone/music in my good ear but I have the volume set so it is comfortable to listen to in a quite room.

There is no point replacing one loud noise with another.

But the thing I really like about the Sony headphones is in normal sub 50mph commuting I can listen to any thing I like from Rock to classical and still hear it clearly with having it so loud it’s going to heart my hearing.

I've had the earlier model to these for 4 years now. Basicall the same, but one long cable instead of having a break in the middle. Fantastic, cuts out noise really well and great sound from them. Never used them when riding, didn't know if i was allowed Embarassed

Gonna give it a go though!
