Just like it says on the tin really, has anyone actually used them and if so how do you rate them?

Never used them but from what i know /very limited/ they are good for getting rid of the heat generated. So all in all on the road you prob only see a slight increase in performance but on the race track alot.

As said thats from a very limited knowledge i have Embarassed

Wavey front disc'c are for tart value only. Unless your thrashing it round a track your very unlikely to get the disc'c hot enough to require waveys.

A wavey rear disc is something i would consider as i use the rear brake alot and standard ones can get quite hot after i've been abusing them on a long ride.

<---

Mmmmmmm wavey discs Drooling

p.s discs are mostly tart, if you want to stop quicker then change your caliper.. most brake improvements IMO are in the lines, pads, caliper, m/cylinder and finally the disc.. in that order.. IMO.

Read his post again.. he said tart value because you don't get them hot enough on the road, however he sits on his rear brake which makes it really hot so a wavey might be of use..

Cosmetic value only, far better ways of spending your money to improve your braking

I'm suprised zxr400er hasn't auctioned off his parents in order to afford some wavey discs for his zxr400tartmobile yet.. hehe

Had them on my BIRD for a few weeks and quickly removed them as they were pants. I felt a lot of flutter through the front brake lever and found they were grabby at low speed. Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

Unless he sits on his rear brake for the whole ride out then it obviously won't get hot enough unless he is on a track will it! Confused

Just seems a bit like he is criticising something that he hasn't got to me!

That clear enough for you shaun?

As i said front disc's are big enough and with the load and heat spread betwean 2 large discs directly in the airflow its going to take some real hero riding to get the front disc's hot enough to justify Wavey's.

Guessing they are to take away the problems of heat fade! If you have chnged the pads, and the lines I would say maybe go for the disc as the other bits should be fine!

I've used them, can't say i noticed any difference, but then i hadnt ridden the bike before it had them fitted.
From all the reviews i've read of them, and comments from everyone i've heard who has them, heat is the only thing they mention.
They are obviously designed to behave exactly like normal disc's only be more effective at dissipating heat, which they do very well.
The issue isnt how well do they dissipate heat, but one of do you actually need greater heat dissipation. If your going on track a great deal, then yes you probably do. Otherwise no you don't.
If you don't NEED the discs then you could still get them, but they would only serve to mike your bike look better rather than effect performance noticeably.

Stop trying to highjack the thread with pathetic nit picking shaun.

No thanks Razz

Oh and for my 2 pence... Mcjam does actually know what a track looks like. I.e, not wholly tart value by your first point Martin.

Yeah, its that grey blur that goes past your head as you bounce a bit. Razz

What discs would you lot recommend then? Mine will be coming up for replacement soon-ish and I'm thinking that I may as well spend a bit more on some better ones than standard. They will be used for the road and in the wet and money is definately not unlimited - that counts out a PFM conversion then! Razz

It is possible to overheat your brakes on the road. I turn the front discs blue on my Fireblade through heavy breaking, I go through 2 front tyres to each rear but I'm a heavy front end rider and no my brakes aren't seized.

If the disc makes so little difference why do A.B.E. make three different compound discs depending on usage?

Wavey discs do shed heat quicker and also skim the pads clean constantly so yes they should break quicker but also shred pads. A lot of the breaking ability comes down to transference of heat so high Iron content discs will always work best regardless of the pettern.

Hi

I am dubious that they will do anything to stop themselves over heating. Less surface area that a conventional disk, and also less metal in total so they will heat up more quickly.

What they will do is skim a layer from the top of the pad as an edge passes them, and also allow the escape of the layer of gas that is generated between the disk and the pads.

All the best

Keith

To be honest, I don't think that they'd do that any better than grooved and/or drilled normal discs. Heat dispersal, pad cleaning and allowing the gas and associated powder to escape are what drillings are all about afterall.

Hi

I agree with you. Suspect they do a better job than most drilled disks, but grooved disks will do much the same job (except the grooves seem to disappear with age).

All the best

I heard that wavey disks help increase braking power due to the overall mass of the disk is alot less than a conventional circular disk and hence needs less braking power to slow down.

I've not actually used them so cannot say whether this is true or not but I heard that off of Bikes Aloud or something (a program on men and motors).

May be wrong - anyone care to correct me?

The rotational inertia of those wavy discs will be negligably less than conventional circular ones. The amount of brake force used to slow the brake disc is a negligible part of the overall force used to slow the bike. A red herring methinks.

To increase the braking force, either increase the brake pressure, the effective radius of the brake disc, reduce the rolling radius, and/ or increase the coefficient of friction between the disc and pads.
