Hi there,

My CG ran out of oil.

It was going fine..better than fine even.
And then it just conked out, like running out of petrol.

Wen it came to a halt it gave a little pop, and that was that.

Wont start.
100% out of oil Sad WOOPS

will turn over with the kick starter.

There was no knocking before hand.

I can smell burning oil when i try to start it so im thinking this could be a simple ring failure ?

Should I tear it apart and expect to replace piston and bore or should I not even bother and source a new engine ?

Anybody done this before.. ?

Thanks for any help

Jamie

There's only the dipstick on the CG, not even a sight glass.

You can usually tell if you're low on oil because the engine is even hotter and noisier than normal. I'd have thought you'd have noticed clouds of bluey white smoke from the exhaust had it been burning oil but nm.

As to why it doesn't start, if the rings have knackered themselves there'll be no/ not much compression. A crude test is to hold a finger over the sparkplug hole whilst you turn the engine over. You shouldn't be able to hold your finger over the hole against the pressure if you have compression.

A top end rebuild shouldn't be too difficult, just a bit time consuming I should think. It's possible you could get away without a rebore, but I don't know how advisable that'd be.

There's no oil in it at all?

You may have fused the engine parts together which got no oil! Shocked

Try filling it up with more engine oil because it's cheaper than buying a used engine to see if the original one still works either that you've got an oil leak some where on your bike - possibly requiring a new gasket set?

Can you not find any signs of leakage ?

Hi there all,

thanks for the replies.

Filled with oil again and tried to start but no hope.

turns over on the kick starter but will not start.

top end rebuild would be nice !

Do you think I could get away with just a top end rebuild ? , just if any of you have previous expierence and got away with it...

cheers
Jamie

Does it have compression?

Did you run out of fuel & only noticed the lack of oil at the same time???

Whats the plug look like?

Is there a spark?

Hmm, running out of oil on a 125.... expensive.

I almost did that on my KH125 years ago. It coughed and spluttered just as I got to the garage. Bought a couple of litres of oil, poured in and left to gently tick over and bleed itself in. 'twas fine.

But sounds like you've run a bit farther past that point though.

Means you'll spend more time checking it in future. (We all go through this phase, it's only natural! Wink )

If its a 2 stroke and it has lost compression then there will be no force pumping the oil round, chances are your rings blew, lost compression and you have a shit load of oil sitting in your crank case..thats me assuming its a 2 stroke?

Nope. Smile CG125, aircooled Honda pushrod single. Things stopping with pops and hiccups usually means no petrol rather than a siezure though. As ZRX61 said, you do have enough petrol? I think we probably need to know the answers to his other questions too. If it hasn't siezed, has compression, spark and petrol getting through the carbs, then there's not really a lot which can be wrong with it.

I had a cg125 as a first bike and it leaked a miniscule amount of oil out of a seal on the gear changer.
After many months it eventually ran dry and did the same as yours.
Pulled over at side of road and eventually got it restarted but there was a loss of compression and hardly any pulling power atall.
Got it home and after pulling the top end of the engine apart i found the piston, rings etc were black and half way dead.
Sourced the parts from a local breaker rebuilt and it was as good as new and the person thats now got its still running it to this day.
Id bet the same things wrong with yours but prob unlucky and lost all compression, try and get hold of a top end from a breaker.
btw i paid 100 pound for the parts and they were off a cg thts gearbox had gone and the bike had only been months old.
