I am about to go and spray my fuel tank. I have sanded it down to get rid of the shiny surface. Do i need to put a layer of primer on or can i just spray the paint direct onto it?

Yes same colour (blue)

Only thing is, where i had to use a file to get the decals off there is some little bits of metal showing as the file totally took off the paint, should i spray these small bits with primer or will it be ok?

Yeah, just spot prime it where the metal is showing & then throw the paint on. If the only things showing are blue & bare metal you'l be fine... if there are other colours showing where ya feathered it out then ya could throw a coat of sealer on it to stop bleed thru.

Make sure its totally flat where your paint has chipped, you'll need to rub it back if its not or the finish will not be that good.

If you've gone down to bare metal, you will need to primer it.

The chances are once the paint is on you will see loads of marks which were very difficult to see before, if you are unsure of anything your best bet is to stick on a tiny bit of filler on the bare metal and sand it down to make a nice smooth surface, then prime it. If you do decide to do this and need help with anything let me know.

However if you do decide to spray the bare metal with primer dont just slap the paint on afterwards, MAKE SURE YOU FLATTEN THE PRIMER with a very fine grade of wet and dry otherwise it will be very noticeable after the final coat of paint is on.

hope this helps mate Very Happy

Also before you prime it use a rag and some thinners and wipe over the whole of the tank to make sure there is no silicone particles on there other wise you may find a reaction will eccor which will leave little dimples in your paint work which you will not be able to paint over......

And if it's been painted before (other than original)it may be worth putting a cote of barcoat over it to stop reaction between the new paint and the old stuff(you'll know if it reacts when you put the primer on).I like to prime thing's at least the day before so the primer sinks,if there are any outlines where the metal spots where flat it down and prime again.
