just passd my test and as i made claim last year cant afford a big bike for insurance reasons, well to the point, i was thiunking of either buying a cb250superdream or a de-restricted nsr, its lasting 1 and a half years which will give me 2 years ncb and time to save for something bigger. i will have about 1000 to spend on the bike and about 500 for insurance.\
what deos anyone recon???
thanks

superdream could be a nightmare!

Id recommend a 251 MZ, great handling, dirt cheap and a 2 stroke!

21 horsepower, cheap insurance and a hell of a lot of torque for a 250. Lovely easy going motor! Is very very frugal on 2t oil as well.

I had a 301 MZ and it was a good machine. The MZ club is also wonderful.

dont like the sound of the MZ no offence.
why could the superdream be a nightmare?? would a older nsr be reliable as i recon a superdream would be.
oh it might have to last a bit longer, maybe more like 5-6 years, just a little bit longer Laughing

the superdreams have top end problems with old ones with miles on them. If you get one make sure its been well maintained

The NSR would be fun around the lanes, but not so fun when u have to use it practically. remember a 30 horsepower 125 is still only going to have half the torque of a 250, and youll have to rev the balls out of it by comparison-not fun on a daily commute or a long trip.

I recommend the MZ, having had one (An ETZ 301 Luxus) myself-they handle beautifully and are a good laugh round country lanes. Dont let people put you off them, as people who take the piss have invariably never owned or ridden one!

Also look at other bikes, suzuki GN250s and 400s are good 33bhp'ers, as is the Honda Bros 400.

bros 400's are just so old though, imagine in 5 years time having a 1990 or older bike. its going to get unreliable right?

I had a 1987 cbr 600 which never once let me down even after being torched it still runs and now another member of this forum has it.

Its done over 50 000 miles.

if you can, find a cb250n - they have a small front fairing that would help keep the wind out of your face.

i would go for the cb250, slightly better in the long run Thumbs Up

One thing with the CB250superdream, they go forever. If you want a reliable commuter then get the honda. If you want a toy get the NSR. Personally I would get something better than both, restricted something or other.

The 250 4 stroke may well make less power than the 125 2 stroke.

Look at 500cc 4 strokes, as mentioned above, they often have cheaper insurance than 125s; as more 125s are ridden/crashed by learners and they are more often stolen.

Hi

Years since I rode a 250 Superdream. Also known as Wetdream or Nightmare.

Performance wise a derestricted 125 would leave it for dead, and it would top out at about 90 at best.

They are a good solid bike and will cruise well sitting at a constant speed. Handling is OK in a stable kind of way.

Reliability was OK. Cam chains go. Cams seize in the head if you do not change the oil (every 1800 miles). Forks rot. Wiring rots. You will be looking at a 22 year old bike at best. Expect to find seized brakes, dodgy shots, seized bolts, rotton seat bases, etc.

No Superdreams had a fairing as standard (and the CB250N was was just a Superdream).

If you want a simple 250 that is worth having then find a CBX250RS, the late 4 valve single, but these are quite rare.

All the best

Keith

Nice enough bikes, but the old official import VT250 would be fairly old by now. They were fairly common in Northern Ireland (they still had a 250 learner law) but seemed not that common on the mainland. Basically reliable, but they would just about keep up with a standard RD250LC but when you tried that they tended to blow up.

All the best

supedreams were shit when they were new and they aint got any better with age.
you can get a good already restricted 400 or something like a GS500E (cracking beginers bike) for under a grand.
Shop around and dont jump in at the first you see, you'll find plenty of bikes out there that area lot better than those you've mentioned.

Theres a website for greybikes that gives good info on a lot of the import 400's just cant remember it name Embarassed

you might also want to look at some offroad bikes as you can get full power versions upto 400cc (xr250 or dr350 highly reccomended)that are still below 33bhp and they are brilliant bike to own and ride

Superdream, nah, don't bother because they are quite rare and finding a good one, well nearly impossible.

The CB250, I love them so much I own two of them, very good runners and cheap to run.

CB400's are quite cool, loads of them around but be careful because like the CB250 they are a popular bike for Couriers.

not sure if its to do with your age but both me and my mates get free third party to ride whatever we feel like, were all about 26 but my mate just passed his test and got a bandit400 and is legaly alowed to ride anything now. he goes out on my sv650 all the time on the understanding if he crashes it he buys me a new one.

anyway whats to stop you buying a cg125 frame insuring it and rideing whatever you feel like its not like theft or fully comp insurance is worth it for a 1 grand bike since the excess and extra premiums for the next 5 years would be way over that anyway.

I still say MZ, ride out your restriction and get something nippy backed up by some no claims.

Race rep 125s are all well and good until you have to get them rebored, fork out for lots of oil and get it stolen.

They often do it for bikes over a certain capacity.

Also, most ones specify that the bike you are riding has to be insured to someone else. On all policies you are not allowed to ride any bike you own apart from the insured one under the policy.

I say MZ!

I've got an MZ 251 sitting in my garden atm. It's nippy enough to be damn good fun, and economical enough not to leave a gaping hole in my credit card.

Or I could suggest the TZR250 that's sitting in the garage. But that'd be a little suicidal.
