Hi,

I have just done an online quote for Motorcycle Direct for my RG125F. On the quote I put I was 17, 1 years NCB, no convictions, accidents etc, bike to be stored in a garage, with a chain and padlock for security. To be riding on a provisional, annual mileage of 5000, and for social and domestic use only.

The result I got was bollocks if you ask me. They wanted 1300 with 150 excess. That was fully comp'd.

Any other good places I can try? I want a quote of around 500-700 really.

The RD I got quoted 450 tpft with 1 year NCB.

Hi

As a learner they know that there is a high chance of an accident, and also know that with fully comp they might have to pay out a large amount for you just dropping it in a car park.

Fully comp is always stupid money for learners, both for cars and bikes.

All the best

Keith

Its a stupid amount and I don't know what to do now. I wanted to have the RG as my main bike, but now it looks as if I have to ride the RD, which I don't really want to do. I can't say how annoyed I am at this present moment. Insurance is bullshit.

Hi

Forget fully comp and go for tpft and then you will get a sensible quote, probably half that quote.

At the end of the day fully comp just means that if you have an accident the insurance company do the chasing rather than you, and with bikes fully comp almost never includes personal injury cover.

All the best

Keith

I wanted fully comp really because of the expensive fairings. I don't want to drop it and get nothing out of it. But I guess if I'm careful, I can go tpft. I'll give it a go.

Anybody else had stupid insurance quotes?

I had a stupid insurance quote of £307 TPFT for a Bandit 600. What *were* they thinking? Razz

Online quotes are usually too vague, dont give you a very good idea. Also a lot of the online agencies only work with more expensive insurers who dont always specialise in bikes.

I was getting quotes of £1300 TPO for my Bandit6 on www.onlinebikequote.co.uk, but a quick call to Carole Nash and I was insured for £660 fully comp.

The bike specialists should be able to help you. I cant see it being much more than about £500 TPO on an RG125. I was insured at 17 with 1 year no claims on an RS125 and that was £680. I did get quotes much cheaper but they all wanted an instant down payment which I couldnt afford at the time. Needed to go for a more expensive policy to pay it off in installments.

Dont give up hope because of the online quote though. Best off phone people like Carole Nash, Bennetts, the people you'd expect to be quite expensive. Thumbs Up Razz

And they are working on the basis that should it fall over in a car park then you will claim and they will write the bike off.

I would suspect that at least 90% of 17 year old learners are insured third party.

£650 tpft on a Mini. In 1986.

All the best

Fully Comp is a waste of money really for a bike only worth little over a grand. TPFT should save you hundreds.

Yep, i'm TPFT and my bike is worth over £3000 theoretically, however next year I will probably go FC. Smile

Go TPFT, i'd even be tempted to go TPO on that bike. Smile

Before going with fully comp, see how much it'd actually cost you to claim for something.

£150 excess, your insurance will go up for the next five years, the extra cost of fully comp over TPO or TPFT, you have to start again with any NCB you had and claims for theft result in your policy finishing. For a £1000 bike claiming really, really, really wouldn't be worth it especially at the age of 17 for fairing damage when you drop it which I'd be fairly confident in saying will happen at some point.

Save your money and go TPO. Thumbs Up

Insurance is still a lot cheaper than Northern Ireland. I was ringing this evening about an NC30 aged 18 with 2 years NCB and the best Carole Nash could come up with was £1660 TPFT. Shocked

Hi

Further to what Ste says, with some policies when you claim they cancel the remainder of the policy.

Try speaking to Charles Hursts in Belfast (the big dealers) and they seemed to come out with about the best quote for my sister.

All the best

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll look into it, and as you say, try TPO and TPFT as well. Like I said, I'm willing to pay around 600 maximum really, maybe 700.
