Let's see your home spray jobs

I'm thinking of spraying the TZR in the near future, and I want to see what kind of quality you guys have managed at home with just some elbow grease and spray cans.

I'm in two minds about spraying the tank aswell, I'm worried I won't get as good a finish on the metal compared to the plastic fairings.

I'd be interested to see any repairs aswell, i.e fibre glass matting repairs.

In the process of doing a Foggy Petronas paintjob on my Tyga VFR, only got one picture of the undertray and before it was lacquered and polished.

Attached a picture of some VFR panels I did to match the original paintjob, sold them now though, was a very nice finish, the only let down was I couldn't get a mirror polish. This was just the way i'd done it, peices since, including the undetray have a virtually mirror polish to them now.

If your going to do this i would strongly advise investing in space heaters as paint can take months to dry properly and ruin all your hard work very easily.

You have to put enough paint on so you can wet sand it very finely before you apply the lacquer. Then just lacquer it in as many coats as you can (I did 8), then you use a cutting compound to smooth it up and polish it. The more coats of lacquer you have the less you risk rubbing through the lacquer, also make you do a spiral rub when you're using cutting compound or it'll give a rubbed looking finish to the paintjob when the light hits it.

Painted the whole bike using Halfords spray cans, including the wheels. Stickers off eBay.
Whole lot prob cost ~£50.

My CG. Not much to look at but the tank was a duller shade of red, with paint peeling. I had to sand the whole thing down as best I could and repaint it... with a little help from my dad.

Was quite pleased with how it turned out considering how I did it all on the cheap, in just a few days in a cold garage...

In answer to yer questions...
Yep just sanded, primered, painted and lacquered.
I separated the colours using masking tape and newspaper. Because I needed curves I used that special 'curvable' masking tape from B&Q. In a coupla places the paint bled SLIGHTLY but I wasn't fussed because I was using a thin pinstripe which was black but reflected white in headlights. Looked better in real life than in pics...
I can recommend using this pinstripe cos it hide any probs with the edge and I think it looked quite good.

LOTS of work for sure but the better you prepare the better the result.. Next time I would spend more time prepping before the primer and use a WARM room with better ventilation.
Very satisfying and LOADS cheaper than a paint shop for sure.

Yep - Stolen back in August! Got it back but they'd trashed it.
Fitted ANOTHER blade engine but with all the other damage I'd kinda lost heart so have just sold it on eBay.
Ironically, bidding finished yesterday and the guy is collecting it tomorrow.

l sore your bike on ebay a few days ago, still looked real nice. last year a guy was selling a CBR400 with a blade engine in and a custom paint job the bike went for somethink like £3000+

Yeah - my bike only went for £1,260!
I think all the damage etc. really affected the bidding.
Also I was very (TOO?) honest about the damage / problems.

A CBR400 with a blade engine seems a bit much.. Do yer reckon the chassis, tyres, etc. could handle the power?

So now I'm bikeless for the first time since I was 17.
Gonna start saving for one of them new Gixxer Thou's!
