Scrap it or Fix it

My ZXR400 had a funny knocking noise so i took it to the garage and they said it could be the cam chain so i had that checked and the valve clearances done (cost £100). They then informed me it could be the big end. They told me it would cost me about £1000 to fix.

Today i took my bike to another garage, just let him listen didn't say anything he sat on the bike engaged the engine with the brake on and said to me he thought it could be the cam followers or the little end. But thought it would be the cam followers as it didn't sound like a little end has gone. Also said the cam followers were soft or something on Kawasaki's.

If its the cam followers it will cost between £300-400

If its the little end it will cost £600-800

I could get between £500-800 as it stands i reckon i'm not sure whether to get it fixed or to cut my loses and get somthing else although i can't really get anything at the moment as i'm a bit skint i could just about cover the £800, but i don't want to get another bike and be in the same situation a month down the line.

buy a new engine and whack it in, if your skint its best to learn to do stuff yourself. its not only cheaper but safer and a lot better for your bike since event the best mechanics have bad days while you will take pride in it

Hey, justw ondering how you got on cos mine has a knockin noise when it accelerates sometimes, thiought it was oil pressure but seems ok for 2weeks then todays tarted bein noisy after about 50miles

I think the first job is to find a mechanic that actually has some idea what they are talking about.

There is a great difference in noise between a big end going, a small end going, a cam chain going and the followers being worn out.

First obvious point. There is no small end bearing on a 4 stroke its a plain bearing and virtually never fails. If it does think new con-rods. Although the gudgeon pins wear but I really doubt this has happened. The only way to check this is strip the engine and measure.

Followers should have been checked when the clearances were done.

Big end or main bearings can be checked to a degree using an oil pressure tester. If the piston is hitting the head this is often confused with a follower problem.

Cam chains whirr no knock.

Get a leak down test.

Does the noise go when you pull the clutch in?

Could also be the CCT?

yeah cos then theres no load on the engine, it stops after about 5k rpm but it isnt happening all the time, first time in 2weeks

At idle if its rattling, and you pull the clutch in and it stops then its just the clutch basket,

ZXR's are rattly, get over it.

Don't rebuild it... buy a new engine, much cheaper but you'll have to look/ask around a bit to find one, they are out there though..!

ZXR engines can be found between £200 - £500.

Might be the best way forward

yer i get a rattle ...like from 2000rpm to 3000. only in 1st when i set off. but if i set of and slip the clutch a little and say the revs are at like 3500rpm its fine.....i just though it was cham chain. but what do i know

im in the same situation mate, was contemplating getting mine repaired for 700 quid, exact same problem as yours, but then these guys on here advised me to buy a new engine and just attempt to put it in myself, i aint got the money for engine at the mo so ive just been makin the bike look cosmetically sound (have slowed down abit cos of the cold weather), im saving and have had qoutes for a new engine at around £350 with delivery and 3 months warranty, cant be bad, im guessin ill be more proud of the bike when the new engines in coz i will have done it, although it will deffo need looking over at a garage afterwards incase ive done summat wrong, id say deffo get the new engine and u will feel great once u ride it,good luck mate
