After riding with a few different people of different abilities I've found opinions of 'fast' differ vastly.

For this example imagine normal use on dry country A and B roads.

For me

Slow - 40mph
steady - 70mph
Fast - 90mph
Maniac - 120+mph

So what is it for you?

As long as you mean FAST, rather than QUICK, i would say for me :

Arrow Slow - 40mph
Arrow steady - 75mph
Arrow Fast - 100mph
Arrow Maniac - 125+mph

Slow - 30MPH
Steady - 65MPH
Fast - 80MPH
Maniac - 100MPH

I find I am one of the slower riders, but I don't care. Smile

Don't know about fast but when I'm out on a run we usually "cruise" between 80 - 100 fast usually is above that up to 130.

Good question.

My personal 'fast' is anything that pushes my comfort zone. I can't put a specific speed on it cos what's comfortable one day might feel uncomfortable on another. I've had days when 40's felt horrid, days when 140's felt like nothing.

To be honest, I don't really try and ride fast on the roads, I do enough trackdays to get all that out of my system where I can be proper fast (maybe not compared to people who are faster than me, but compared to what I could ever realistically achieve on the road). I've never really seen the attraction of riding straight into an oncoming car or wrapping myself around a lampost so have always veered towards the cautious on the roads - expecting the unexpected and all that. Likewise, I've never been one to push my comfort zone just to keep up with other people - maybe I'd be a faster rider if I had but it just ain't me. On the roads anyway. Wink

I like to go out on a nice day, be smooth, enjoy myself and just go at whatever speed I feel like that day.

That's one of the problems I have encountered with rideouts. Most of them seem to whizz off at 100MPH+, it's not that I can't keep up, well I can't being 33BHP, it's the fact I enjoy my scenery and if I went fast everywhere biking would quickly become boring. Penny Coin Penny Coin

With me its not about going fast everywhere, i enjoy my cruising rides, hanging at 80mph with some long, easy turns, slightly banking over with the trees and hills just to my side etc... But i need to have those "fast" sections to keep my interest alive, if im going somewhere of any distance i will take it slow and relax, get into a rythm and stick there at 80mph etc... but if im going somewhere relatively close, for the sole purpose of getting there, then the "Fast" side will come out and i will be topping the 100 mark at every chance i can get, as i find journeys boring, when they are not the point of me getting my bike out of the garage... if you see my point? Fast is relative.

60mph on a scooter is scarier than double that on a big bike, IMO. It's all about being comfortably within your vehicle's boundaries vs knowing you're trying to make it go quicker than it was ever intended to. Smile

May I venture another thought...

'Fast' might have something to do with whether you use your bike every day or not.

I drove my slow-ass car all winter, then got on my bike and it felt FAST. I mean proper, screaming woohoo in your helmet fast. Cos I wasn't used to it.

When I used to ride my bike all the time, it was normality and thus didn't feel terribly special to be accellerating like stink (which is the more noticeable bit when you're talking bike vs. car).

Maybe the more you do it, the higher your 'fast' becomes?

I think it depends on the road I am using and the vehicle I am driving/riding

Assuming I am on my CBF600

Motorway or duel carriageways

Slow =40mph
Steady = 80mph
Fast = 100mph
Maniac 120+mph

London riding (i.e. my commute) and a 30 limit

Slow =10moh
Steady = 30mph
Fast = 40mph
Maniac 50+mph

But that probably due to how likely I am to lose my license rather than my chance of coming off

Open A/B roads

Slow =40moh
Steady = 60mph
Fast = 80mph
Maniac 100+mph

But it really has more to do with that specific road the road conditions and traffic and how familiar I am with a road as to what feels “slow” or “fast”.

as bendy says

you cant really say what is fast

ive been out on my RS125 when i got it and did 90 odd

it was unbelieveably fast, altho a quick blat up to 140 only seems minor in comparison

also i consider 60-80 to be fast in say a 30?

All relative depends on the road.

Nice dry open A-road with some long corners would be about.

Slow - 40
Steady - 50-60
Fast 80
Maniac - 100+

I rarely go to far over speed limits, not because I cant, not because im a slow rider but because its a public road! Rolling Eyes , sometimes im sensible, sometimes im not so sensible.

Riding lots of twisty backroads yesterday (chevrons etc) we were 60+ all the time I rekon, pegs and knees were scrapeing all over the place. A few corners were taken at 100+

I would have said that was fast, but not maniac, I could have pushed it more, only my bike's power was the limiting factor.

Fast = when you aren't really riding anymore but hanging onto the thing for dear life , though folks with faired bikes do not have such problems

FAST is not about numbers, its about the way you use the machine in the surroundings your in.
Example...........when i'm out at work my hallway at home is free from diesel, people and sheep yet to ride down it at 10 mph would be manic.
Speed is about road surface and condition of your machine, your personal ability to handle the machine and react to change.
I could take you on a 60mph limit road which you wouldn't ride at over 30mph on and likewise a 30mph road where it should really be classed as a dual carriageway.
Fast IS about how you perceive it to be. I don't see m/way cruising at 110/120 as being fast (providing its relatively clear and free flowing) but i do see the 'SnakePass' in Derbyshire as fast over 60 mph in most parts. Rolling Eyes quite an open question really.

We were doing 140+ for mile after mile in France on the peages....and it soon became boring.
On the twisties in the mountains I'd be suprised if anyone got over 60 for any lenght of time but that was MANIC!

When there's gravel rash on the side panniers you know you've been pushing it.
