It is a source of constant amazement to me how many people think it is acceptable to sit in a lane with their flasher on when they want to pull out despite there being no gap for them to move into. Even more amazing the people who think that doing so means you should give way to them.
They genuinely think they are correct too, so it is no good arguing with them. I had a huge argument with someone about this one and despite showing them the relevant sections of the Highway code and the Road Traffic Act, they still would not conceed the point.
They must all think they are driving buses. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

If you're not supposed to indicate to come into an unbroken stream of traffic, then what are you supposed to do? I stopped in a layby for a break and to warm up a bit some time in January, somewhere in the middle of a 2 mile+ tailback, traffic I could walk faster than. I could see no alternative but to stick the blinker on and sit there until someone let me in; eventually someone let a gap grow and waved me in, for which I was very grateful. Was I supposed to sit there until there was a suitable gap in the mile of queueing traffic behind me?
If someone will give way and wave you into a huge queue because you've got the indicator on, then go for it I'd say. Only pull out if they have given way already however. That's the sin of these people doing U-turns and claiming that they indicated, so it's the bike's fault. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

Unfortunatly my girlfriend is exactly the same as this. She will sit in the middle lane of the motorway waiting for a gap to pull into the outside lane, and will only indicate when she is pulling into it.
It pisses me off no end. She insist's she's in the right every time
I tell her that if she stuck her indicator on when she decided she wanted to go into the 'overtaking' lane, that some nice fellow driving a bmw 5 series would probably just let her into the slightly quicker stream of cars, instead of her sitting there for 10 mins looking for a gap and getting pissed off because there isn't one.

The Highway Code has this on changing lanes | Quote: | 112: If you need to change lane, first use your mirrors and check your blind spots (the areas you are unable to see in the mirrors) to make sure you will not force another driver or rider to swerve or slow down. When it is safe to do so, signal to indicate your intentions to other road users and when clear move over.
113: You should follow the signs and road markings and get into lane as directed. In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily. |
and this on moving off | Quote: | 135: Before moving off you should
* use all mirrors to check the road is clear
* look round to check the blind spots (the areas you are unable to see in the mirrors)
* signal if necessary before moving out
* look round for a final check.
Move off only when it is safe to do so.
Check the blind spot before moving off
https://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/images/135_blind_spot.gif |
and for use of signals by motorcyclists | Quote: | 71: Manoeuvring. You should be aware of what is behind and to the sides before manoeuvring. Look behind you; use mirrors if they are fitted. When overtaking traffic queues look out for pedestrians crossing between vehicles and vehicles emerging from junctions.
Remember: Observation - Signal - Manoeuvre. |
Personnally if there's a lot of traffic I do check for any gaps then signal my intention to other road users so they can see what I want to do and give me the space to do it.
As it also says in the Highway Code | Quote: | 85: Signals warn and inform other road users, including pedestrians... |
