Definition - Sods law

You spend hours cleaning your bike and making sure it's looking as good as possible.
You advertise the bike in adtrader.
You think, what the hell, it's a nice afternoon I'll go for a quick ride.
You catch up to a car on a windy country lane and mid-overtake, full revs, it makes dying noises and gives up.

Arse. Wonder if I can cancel the ad.

Yup. Will find out how bad on Monday as that's the soonest the mechanic can look at it. Would have probably gone with someone else or had a look at it myself but I was stuck in the middle of the countryside and knew he did recovery's, plus had his number on my phone. Oh well.

Yeah, there was plenty of the usual fully synthetic stuff in the tank. Only oil related issue would be if the pump stopped or there was a blockage in one of the pipes or something, I guess all will be revealed later. Sad

Were you planning on giving people a test ride if they had the relevant insurance etc? If so, it's better that you seized it than someone else doing it and binning it as a result.

Tbh if someone gave me 100% deposit I'd have been fine with a test ride, so yeah it's lucky it did work out this way in a sense. In another sense if I'd been able to sell it a month ago the problem might not have been mine. Not that I'd want whoever buys it to suffer a seize after a month or two but frankly, rather them than me and I'm really borderline on being able to afford the SV I'm after, let alone with whatever this will cost me.

Oh well, if anyone wants a very tidy RS which has just had a rebuild then let me know. Neutral

Sorry to hear that mate Sad was only yesterday I was defending the RS's reliability.

I thought it would be one of those 'ive just put my bike up for sale and now Ive dropped/binned it' threads, I hate those - stuff of nightmares!

Hope it gets sorted witout too many limbs going on the black market!

I had a piston seizure a few months back on my 50cc. Not sure how it was caused, but my dad seemed to think that I didn't have enough oil in it, even though there was half a tank of it left?!?

I think it may have been a bit of air in the oil line. It was running fine for about 2 hours, must have done about 30 miles that day. Then on the way home, thought I would rag it to f00k, as its restricted. So I got to this hill flat out down it, indicating about 55. About 10500rpm. So I went down that. Got to my street. Parked up. Opened back gate. Went round to take it round the back. Got to the bottom of the street and it died. Tried kicking it but was quite stiff. Got it up to my garden. Left it for a bit. Came back out and kicked it again but couldn't move the kickstart at all. So I knew it was seized. So what I did was took the sparkplug off, and put some 2 stroke in the top of the barrell. Left it for about 5 mins. Then gave the kickstart an almighty boot and I got a bit of movement, and oil spluttering out of the hole. So I kept forcing the kickstart, and eventually got a lot of movement. I also pre-mixed oil in the tank, even though it has oil pump. So after lubing the piston, I managed to get the thing started, and left it idling for about ten mins. Obviously very smokey, but I was pleased to get it running, about 30 mins after it seizing. Since then it has ran lovely, no problems. Although I never opened it up to check for damage to piston or rings, but it shows no signs of damage according to performance. Still runs sweet as before. Anybody think I should open it up and check the rings? Probably done about 600 miles since the seizure mind you.

Cheers Villers, with any luck I'll be keeping my arms and legs as without 'em riding just wouldn't be the same. Laughing I've happily defended the RS plenty of times too and despite this I'd still say they were great bikes. Will wait and see the bill before deciding how much it's put me off them though. Shocked

Josh I'm not even close to mechanically minded but it sounds like you got off very lightly there. If it's still running then I'd say a bit of denial never hurt anyone. Laughing

Disclaimer: I'm almost certainly going to be wrong about that. Razz

Fucking yes! Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

I just had a thought that maybe it was possible that the spark plug had decided to go for a walk even though it hasn't been touched for a good 6 months. One phonecall later and I was right!! Just a few quid for a new plug instead of £700-800 for a full rebuild. Mr. Green

Three cheers for sheer stupidity!

Does anyone want to buy a fucking lovely RS which is absolutely fine in all senses?

I guess the moral of the story is it's better to be stupid than poor. Thumbs Up Laughing

You want tips from me after that display of stupidity? Laughing

Only things I could say are always warm it up before ragging it at all and always use fully synthetic oil. Anything more than that and you need to ask someone who's actually got a clue. Wink

Not that I can pretend any level of expertise, but from what other people on this forum have said, isn't fully synthetic just a waste of money for little 125's? Just use a respectable mineral oil.

I use semi-synthetic Rock Oil, 4.95 a bottle and does the trick fine. Never had problems. Apparently stuff like Castrol TT oil isn't any different from semi-synthetic oil, just more expensive.

These little 125s are in a very high state of tune and the only thing stopping them instantly destructing is a tiny amount of 2 stroke oil mixed with the fuel / air mix. Yes stuff like TTS is not a waste of money.

If an R1 was in the same state of tune as an RS125 it would be producing 50% more power, and be more powerful than a couple of the bikes racing in Moto GP.

All the best

Keith

Nothing to do with the oil. Most likely the pump stopped working or there was air in the oil line. Definitely plenty of oil in it.

The pump is very unlikely to stop working then start again, and highly unlikely that you would get oil in the line unless you had run it VERY low on oil. Suspect your bike just heat seized, and it might have got away with it with a different oil (unlikely though).

All the best

Well I did absolutely cane it down one hill, managed to get 55 at about 10500rpm so I think that might have killed it off. Remember that it is restricted so it shouldn't even be doing 55.
