I don't understand why everyone has them, is looks all they care about? Their not reliable are they? I know someone with 2 seized engines (not thrashing it) and their not cheap to buy. I reckon rs125 owners on here probably outweight other bikes 2:1

so what's the appeal? blooming aprilla boys Rolling Eyes

I think it's because it's one of the fastest vehicles (acceleration wise) that a 17 year old can insure.

I've heard about how fast they are for a 125. I think that's got to be the only thing going for them, and I suppose they do look like a proper bike (until you turn the engine on)

Hi

Why so many? I only have one Laughing .

They are a very quick 125. Top speed is a realistic 100mph, and acceleration is pretty good. They handle very well and have very good brakes. They look good (well, the early ones did). They are reliable if treated properly. They are very light. Build quality is not bad (certainly better than my 1200 Bandit, for example)

The Mito is close (better at some things, worse at others), but both are noticeable faster than the other choices, with better handling and brakes. To give you some idea of how quick they are, there were 3 at the last Cadwell track day we went to, one of which was one of the fastest bikes in the intermediate group giving the instructor on a Triumph Daytona a hard time.

Yes I do have one. I have had it for almost 12 years. I bought it almost 5 years after I passed my bike test (and it was the 3rd Aprilia 125 I bought since my test), and I owned an FZ750 as well when I bought it.

All the best

Keith

The RS125 is ok, it looks kinda bubbly for my liking.
The Mito is the daddy of the 125’s but if you want a little more life out of your bike (access to parts) then get the RS. Exotic’s are becoming more and more popular, I remember the days of just Suzuki, Yam, Kwak and Honda being the bad boys toys.
European styling and engineering has come forward along way, there is defiantly a market for these high reving short lived machines.
Talk of 100mph+ to you standard shite TZR gets boys dribbling.

Youve not seen rsw125's racing then.

People buy them because they are one of the fastest things allowed on a cbt, they are common, parts are easy to come by, they handle well etc. If they were shit the no-one would get them.

So you know someone with two seized engines and now every RS125 is unreliable? if someone manages to do it twice, I would say they are not looking after the bike properly. It is a two stroke after all, pretty highly tuned at that, certainly not a good match for a 17 year old who can't be arsed to look after it. Why do you care anyway? you seem to be taking a dig at them every other post.

All bikes will break if misused, infact not long ago someone on here had a seized CG125 because they ran it out of oil.

I had an RS a good few years ago, had it from new and it never missed a beat in four years. The only problem I had was corrosion to the swing arm from being lazy one winter, even that wasn't anything major. Like anything, if you look after them they are fine.

They give you a decent grounding for riding larger sports machines and the handling is spot on. Smaller sporty two strokes teach you to get the most of their peeky performance too.

Lets be honest, now although I'm 30 and have owned my RS since 2001 with *touch wood* Laughing no problems, I do accept that due to average age of an RS owner they are going to break.

That doesn't make them a bad bike, hell you could take any make of bike big or small that if it isn't treated reasonably the likelihood is that it will break!

I should be due for taking a full test shortly, and although I do fancy a slightly bigger machine, I wouldn't be worried about keeping the RS for another year or so.

Of course that is ignoring the 14.6hp restriction. Razz Almost any 2t 125 will produce 15 hp, even the DT.

Well, the CX when launched had very major reliability problems. The engines rarely lasting until the first service. One guy I know (now a salesman, was a Honda machanic back then) said the dealership he worked in had to hire loads of lockup garages to store all the bikes they had in waiting to be fixed under warrenty. Yet you seem to view it as reliable.

Sure the RS is not the most reliable bike in the world, but it is acceptable (to me at least) and suffers greatly because for most owners it is their first bike, and they are not only learning how to ride but also how much they can wreck a bike by doing something wrong to it.

All the best

Keith

I had an RS at 17. Fantastic bike, brilliant fun.

Sold it early this year to fund a bandit 600 but soon to buy another one early next month, hoping to track it and run in the occasional club race. Razz

I found it more fun to ride than my 600. Cant wait to get my hands on another though. Thumbs Up

I only had a quick go on an RS and it sold me on the idea of buying one as a project bike.

I never realy liked the RS's... They are just too common for my liking. Back at school everyone was like "Im gona get me a RS50, itll thrash your stupid car, its sooo fast" and then "Im gona derestirict it, and put all this other shit on it, and itll be lightning speed!"... and when ever i see an RS with a ride <20 years old i automatically stereotype them into what i remember from school... i did not want to be associated with that.

Also i dont actually think they are the best looking bike, they look all bubbly, and bloated, with random bulges that i dont see any point to... i much prefer the NSR125s, hence why i bought one, rather than the RS.
