Cagiva Planet 125

Hello to all, I'm new to biking and just picked up a Planet 125. It's stolen/recovered and been bought from a police auction, pretty good condition i think for £250.
Not had it started yet, as the battery is dead as a dodo.

It's been dropped on it's left side but only thing damaged is the gear change lever is bent, pillion footrest is gone, and very small dent in the radiator.

Now i just need to get it it back on the road.

I once dropped mine doing a U-turn before my test and all the electrics curiously died - turned out a fuse had blown for some reason, so check them if it's giving you grief

Going to be more work than i initially thought
I've still not had it running, got the battery back to life though and most of the electrics work, apart from the starter motor and i don't think there is a spark.

Any ideas what would stop the starter working?
I've checked the 2 fuses under the seat and 1 under the tank, am i missing any?

Not sure how you can find out when police auctions are on, around here i sometimes see signs up just like how the computer fairs advertise. I actually bought the bike off eBay, the owner of the garage that sold it told me that:

Yeah the battery is a bit ropey, it is giving about 11.5 volts at the moment. The starter doesn't even try to move, like it's getting no power.

I'll stick it on charge and see if i can get the voltage up any more.

edit: actually i just checked it and it's only giving 7.5v

hi,

can u bump start the bike? then you will be able to see if the battery is getting charged if its not then its prob the altonator/rectifire which is under the seat. with loads of wires coming out on the right hand side. also check the small gold thingy thats just beneath it if the wire has come loose/out then it wont start.

dont for get cagiva are know for sh t electronics so check every thing. lol

No, i've gave up trying to bump it, i don't think there is a spark.
I'm thinking the only way i can check it's sparking is to get the starter going.

Is it possible there is a safety switch that is preventing the engine starting, maybe the stand or clutch lever or something?
My knowledge is very limited, especially until i get hold of the workshop manual

I may order a new battery tomorrow, i'll see how it goes.

As far as I remember, there is a sidestand switch, so make sure it's in neutral when you try to start it.
Can you hear the powervalve cycle when you first turn the ignition key on before trying to start it? It's easily audible, so if there's a deafening silence when you turn the key, the battery's definitely a worry.

Yes I can hear the powervalve doing something when i turn it on.

I've been trying to start it in first as neutral is a bit elusive, not sure if it's just cos the gear lever is bent or the box itself is a bit dodgy...time will tell.
So the starter won't operate is it's in gear?

I was always pretty careful to make sure I was in neutral while starting, so I can't remember exactly how it works, but it's usually the case that sidestand down + in gear = cut ignition. I'm not sure if this would also stop the starter turning, but I guess it's a possibility
If you're having trouble finding neutral, (with the ignition off) put it in first and rock the bike forwards & back a little bit, that sometimes helps you find neutral.

you will be able to start the bike in any gear with stand up or down as there is no switch on the stand unlees they have added one since 2000. the bike should make a sound when you turn it on to check the p.v. and you should also check that you have not acidently nocked the RED kill switch on the right hand side of the handle bars if you have and havnt noticed it wont start atall all the lights will work just no power to fire up.

id just check that all the wires are conected and the spark plug is clean so it will be able to spark up.

Sounds like the classic cagiva starter soleniod cock up. There with be a small electical box half way between the battery and the starter. It will have one big fat red wire going to it and one big fat black wire going fromn it to the starter.There might be a few smaller wires coming from it and there should be a diode on the side. Give it a good poke and try starting it again. Works for most people.

If you've got anymore problems i woud suggest putting them in the workshop area where people are more likely to find them.

I stick with OE brembo pads on mine, but with the planet you've got a better choice.

I would say EBC sintered are better than EBC kevlar and the EBC sintered are equal to the Carbone Lorraine pads, with the OE brembo ones being a notch below the sintered and Carbone Lorraine.

However, i've never used sintered or Carbone Lorraine as they don't fit the supercity.

Only go for the kevlar ones if you're on a budget and don't mind reduced stopping power.

Cagiva's have plenty of niggles, its just knowing how to sort them...

V5 came today.
Going to sort out my CBT this weekend and hopefully i'll be on road early next week.
I think the fork seals need replacing, will see if the mot tester notices

The bike is now taxed and tested, good news is it sailed through it's MOT.
I'll get some pics up sometime.

Bad news is there is a vibration from the front wheel when i get the speed up, feels like the wheel has a chunk out of it (wheel itself looks fine).
Fingers crossed it's the bearings.
Second problem is the clutch is about to die, and from what it looks like it's not exactly a trivial task to replace it

Great fun pottering about on it though, the powerband is quite vicious first few times you hit it.

If you're even luckier it might have just lost a balance weight and needs rebalancing...

Checked the front bearings today, found one side had a bit of play, replaced them and yay the nasty vibration has almost gone (possibly mentally scarred). Bike has gained 10mph (rider not worried about the front going walkabouts above 70?).
Bike is getting better by the day.
