Slipped, when putting bike on centre stand

Woops...

First time.

I was soaking wet this morning and my foot slipped and I lost my balance.

Managed to lower it down though, it didn't just fall.

Phew.

(Can't see owt wrong, got it back up straight away).

Next time when its wet, i'll use the side stand.

Bad luck - glad the bike wasn't hurt!

PS Are you using the centre stand properly? i.e not trying to 'wrestle' the bike onto it, but standing down on the lever at the end of the stand, which levers the bike up for you? (I haven't explained that very well, but there you go...)

I always use the Sidestand on the GSX, too much hassle to use the centre stand.

Only time I use it is to lube the chain and stuff.

There is a bit of a knack to putting the centre stand up. Unfortunately using the centre stand is quite a bit harder on a 205KG Bandit than it was on the moped.

Must admit, I never got the hang of centre stands. I have *always* used brute forceto get bikes up on them. Took two guys to get the bandit on the centre stand, neither of us had a clue on how to use it! I barely got my KH125 on the centre stand.

First time i dropped a bike was on the forecourt of a busy petrol station.

Yes, before I did my CBT I'd ridden scooters in other countries (completely legally, I should point out!) and I didn't have the faintest idea how to get the bike on the centre stand.

My technique was to run the bike backwards as fast as possible, and then slam the centre stand down and try to get it stuck into the ground so the bike's weight pivoted it up onto the stand. Of course, my garage at home had a smooth floor, so when I got my moped (90kgs and 50cc's...) it always took me ten tries before I could get it up properly! I thought that sticky-out bit of metal on the centre stand was just to give more stability once the bike was up, I even wondered why it was only on one side!

That was the best bit on the CBT - realising the centre stand was actually usable!

the trick is one smooth action... stand down and sweep the weight back with the grabrail or whatever... my dads norton was Impossible to do, untill he tought me that, now its easy..

I now use the side stand first, that way if there were any probs it would simply fall back onto that.

With the old bandit I used the centre stand at a petrol station on a slight slope away from me. When I took it off the stand my foot was right under where the rear wheel landed. I was stuck, couldn't reposition foot to gain stability to move bike off foot.

A nice security guard helped pick up the bike whilst I collected shattered pieces of ego.

meh, i'm a bit hopeless with centre-stands too.. i see guys do it big bikes with ease and all i can say is WTF!

sidestand for me unless i'm lubing the chain, checking wheel bearings, tyre condition, cleaning etc..

i've heard practice makes perfect

Good mass distribution and centre stand design would be things I'd have on my list for when I choose a bike. My Hongdou, 130kg is a pain in the arse to put on the centre stand, if you don't get it just right, it won't go up, even with brute force.

My mum's F650 on the other hand, 180kg+ with fuel, positively floats onto the centre stand, just with a bit of weight and hardly any lifting effort. I dare say the Germans did a far better job designing the weight distribution and stand than the Chinese.

Any one got advice on getting a VFR 750 onto the centre stand?.

there just is nothing on the side of the bike to grab and pull to give a helping hand, I always need some one at the back of the bike to pull on the passenger grab handles as i am stepping on the lever point of the centre stand.

Centre stands are easy! have put all my dads bikes up on them alot of old bikes with poorly designed centre stands, minus the commando that things a dream! You should all try rear wheel stands, now they are fun, you have to dismount hold the bike up till you are behind it, kick the stand down, place a foot on the stand to hold it in place then pull backwards. . .

ninelives: Grab hold of the rear pillion peg hanger. Also as I said put side stand down to ensure you won't drop it.
