I suppose there's nothing to stop you buying any 600cc+ sports bike and down gearing it. That should produce some rapid acceleration.

If you don't want to go over 100 then I suggest you consider some manner of Supermoto.

Another excellent suggestion might be something like an Aprilia RS250 or a Suzuki RGV250.

You need to keep an eye out for a good one particularly with an RGV, but I suspect you can probably get a freshly rebuilt RGV for about a grand. If they work OK (and don't blow up) then they are quick!

You have rather limited yourself by restricting the capacity to 500cc. Generally 500cc bikes will be four stroke parallel twins and not considered quick as such.

You may also consider a 400cc bike and downgear it a few notches to eke out some more acceleration.

Other than that I don't have many more sensible suggestions I'm afraid.

but you'll need another grand every three months for pistons

buy a 600 and lose a tooth off the front sprocket and put three on the rear

there you go, reliable, banzai fun

Dusty lost two teeth on the front sprocket and added two to the rear on his R6 and it was still capable of over 100mph...

it wheelied with a hiccup from the rider though and I wouldn't consider it an ideal bike for someone whom had just passed a DAS!!

I was riding a 955i at the time and it made me almost shit myself when I pulled away in first! Shocked (and my 955i was downgeared a bit too!)

Maybe you should buy a Bandit 6 and seriously downgear it. The extra weight will actually help acceleration because it will help prevent unwanted wheelies and help you get the power down to waste porsches off the lights!

That sounds like a plan to me... and then in the future you can bore the engine out to 883cc... Shocked

Just be careful what you tell the insurance company! Laughing

No, they are good bikes but generally require rebuilding every five minutes because they like to eat their own powervalves. You can fit Stan Stephens powervalves or similar and this makes them a lot better, but a 250cc two stroke is never going to rival a Japanese four cylinder four stroke (such as the bulletproof aforementioned Bandit 6).

A downgeared Kawasaki GPX600 would do the job, you should be able to pick one of those up for well under a grand, depending on how rough it is. They look respectable enough, though definately 80's compared to the more modern kit.

Any bike will accelerate like runny shit off a shovel if you increase the number of teeth on the back sprocket and decrease the number on the front sprocket.

Don't forget the insurance costs, depending on how old you are. I'm surprised nobody has produced a CapsLock HowTo yet.

Hrm, isn't that the equivalent of about 8 up on the rear sprocket? Thinking Laughing No wonder it went.

nc23 or a cheap nc30 would do the trick and wouldnt burst into flames every ten minutes or threaten to kill you at the first hint of a bend, zxr400 is worth a look in too,

How about a bike like a CB1 or Superfour?

Would be ideal for someone who's just done their DAS, plus they're good handling bikes and a lot of fun sub-100mph and pretty nippy downa B-road. Biking isn't all about straight line acceleration/speed, a bike like these would teach you about machine handling, road awareness, cornering, forward planning, etc. Cheap too.

They could be downgeared quite easily for more go, although this may mess up the speedo readout (it's driven from the front sprocket on these bikes).

Failing that, if I was in a similar position, it'll have to be a 4 stroke 'crosser with a loud pipe, supermoto'd up.

Try RD350LC, 350YPVS, RD500 and RG500. Blisteringly quick bikes and can give some of the big mothers a surprise at times.

Mate of mine will have his 350ypvs up for sale soon. Its one of the first ones (A reg) but with the newer bean can exhausts fitted (looks much better!). Comes with quite a few spare parts inc original exhausts, rear sets... Will also have 12 months T&T.

When its ready, I'll stick it in the Sales section.
