I think you've got to know the TT course like the back of your hand to stand a chance of putting in a good time and surviving so I reckon they'd do shit. I also dont think they'd have the balls for it.

He never mentioned that it would be a one off.
Rossi and a handful of GP riders are the best of the best in motorcycling, they could turn their hand to any bike challenge and probalbly be at the sharp end.

On a nicely prepared racing surface they're great. On the patchy roads of the TT they'd shit themselves IMO. Would love to see them have a go though and proove me wrong.

Im sure rossi and co never ride on roads, and if they did so they would be VERY careful not to break the speed limits or go over any bumps Rolling Eyes

Talent is talent. Take the winner of the TT, just like everyone else he has had to learn the course. On his first blast out I bet he was shitting it too, but he grew to know the course and he succeded.

Given time and the backing Im sure that GP riders could progress in a similar manner.

How about the flip side of the arguement. How would a TT winner fare against a world champion MotoGP rider like rossi on the track?

I don't think Rossi would be much cop at it , road riding is so different to track , i'm not saying he couldn't learn but i really don't believe he would do anywhere near as well as he does on the track

I forgot to add to my post that I have an awesome respect for the TT riders, they have BALLS to do that. Watching an onboard when some guy is doing 160 round a bend with road furniture everywhere is very impressive!

I think if he put his mind to it he could, the same as road riders who have gone to the track. Foggy did both and wasn't exactly unsuccessful.

If anyone's seen Rossi spinning up a 250bhp Honda for fun on the last lap of a race, then taking his eyes off the road before looking at his fanclub - all the time while black smoke is pouring from his rear tyre, I doubt they'd say he doesn't have the balls.

good question. I reckon theoretically they'd do well, but in reality when you're used to riding on a (relatively) safe and controlled track, the slight hesitation that might come from seeing a brick wall skirting the outside of a corner would be enough to slow them down below the speed of the TT top runners.

I don't know for a fact, but I'd be willing to bet that a higher percentage of TT riders have road bikes than the GP stars.

Besides (this is a bit of a tangent), you have to remember that Rossi is good on the track, but he doesnt necessarily have any road riding skills. There are probably people on this site that could perform a tighter u-turn or filter through busy traffic quicker.

If anyone doesn't think a GP rider would have the balls to ride fast on the road, check Shane Byrne's riding in this video:-

Road racing and road riding are just a tad different Razz

There are alot of racers who don't even have a road licence.

I asked this very question at the TT chat show at the Villa marina Douglas this year.
All the riders said that MotoGp boys are the best in the world, but only reckoned that they would get top six at the TT.

As has been said they are the best riders in the world but would they be prepared to push that hard for a race thats not for the world championship i doubt it.

If Rossi was to quit moto GP to race on the roads you'd better believe he would win in the end,you need machine control, circuit knowledge and a bit of luck to win the TT.

I think Dave Jefferies won his first TT on his 3rd visit to the island, but i could be wrong,so Rossi should be able to equal that.

It's a good question, but i feel they are 2 seperate and distinct disciplines.
I teach martial arts, and am often asked the question 'Which is the best martial art?' My answer is: Which is better, oranges or apples?

Jealousy, bitterness and envy are not very becoming character traits.

If you're fast on a bike then you're fast on a bike. End of.

Does anyone really believe that sticking a few bumps and hedges in the mix is going to make that much difference? I have no doubt that he would need a fair amount of practice and a few runs to get into it, but I don't see how anyone could argue that he would be a force to be reckoned with.

So if you gave a 250BHP Yamaha to the guys in the TT, they wouldn't end up highsiding it out of the first corner on a pure race track? I know a lot of them have come from track racing backgrounds, but it works both ways. As said before, riding a bike is riding a bike. Rossi is great at riding bikes so therefore he would be good at any form of bike sport, in theory. Give him enough time and he would win it and probably set some new records whilst doing it.

Remember that the TT used to be an official round back in the 50s,60s,70s etc. How good was Mike Hailwood in his day? He could do anything, ride any size of motorcycle, and still win. He even had a ten year lay off, and came back to win a TT, what other rider could perform such an incredible feat today? Okay, the machinery was a bit different, as was the track, but if anything, it was even more dangerous/required greater skill to ride like that, the competition was certainly just as fierce.

They say it takes about 3 years to properly learn the course, I doubt that the best riders in the world would have much problem learning how to be the quickest around any course in the world. Plus with the latest crop of MotoGP bikes, with proper setup, the lap times would be incredible.

Safety is a big issue, people are killed at the TT every year, but danger is part of racing, I presume it's part of the reason for doing it: being the best, being the fastest. Mind you, the TT was stopped as a round of the GP500 around 1976 because of safety; obviously the riders/machinery/technology was getting too fast for the track - it is a publicly used road for 99% of the time anyway. We can only speculater how quick the latest crop of MotoGP riders would be in a similar situation, but if they had to do it, I reckon they'd be right up there at the top of the leader boards.

Giacomo Agostini - a little history

From the start of his racing career in July 1961 to the moment of his retirement, officially announced on the 22nd of December 1977, Giacomo Agostini had won on 311 occasions. 122 Grand Prix wins, 12 Isle of Man TT's, 18 Italian championships and 15 times World Championships. A truly remarkable achievement.

hope this is relavent

Hi

Joey Dunlop was one of the greatest TT riders of modern times, yet did not exactly have any great success on track riding. Barry Sheen was reputed to have gone to race at the TT once, crashed very early on and refused to go back.

They are very different. With the TT there are few slow back markers to be caught up with, no real pack to race in, a very bumpy track, a substantially longer race, a far greater variation in corners, some very long flat out section, far less room for cock ups, etc.

I suspect Rossi could do well at the TT, but much of it is in the mind and knowing full well that going slightly over the limits (likely to result in a long slide down the track in a GP) could very easily maim of kill him would have a massive effect on his mind.

All the best

Keith

True, but there are plenty of riders who have been successful at both (Foggy for example).

I think a lot of it would come down to preference of racing type. I believe, given time, Rossi would be quick - whether he'd want to do it is another matter.
