This may have been done in other threads, but can someone please explain to me the science behind countersteering?
I know it works, but i just can't understand why!

Oooo you are so asking the wrong question.

I used to work for a ex-navy helicopter pilot, who was able to explain exactly why countersteering worked and the forces applied when mid turn etc, etc.

Trust me, you will only confuse yourself!

When you push forward on the right bar, the little pixies that live in the bike and keep it up right all run over to the right hand side of the bike to move the bars straight again. This is turn moves some of the wieght over to the right side of the bike and thus makes the bike lean/turn that way.

See, it's quite easy really Laughing

Apparently there's some experiment you can do with a bicycle wheel, but when I tried it it didn't work.

you hold a pushbike wheel by its axle one hand each side , spin it fast and then you can let go of one side of the axle and the wheel will hold itself up and balance on the one hand

i think its all to do with leaning isnt it, you can induce a lean by either keeping the wheels in the same position and moving your body weight to the side of the bike and the bike will pivot around the wheels making it lean. or you can move the wheels in the opposite direction to the lean and this will cause the bike to pivot around the COM rather than shifting it with the bike. im not being very clear and this is my very simple understanding with a picture i found

without countersteering the bike wd be very hard to lean if not impossible. This is to do with gyroscopic effects (which increase with speed).

Scientists have investigated this and their experiments with bikes where the handlebars have been fixed suggest you need to countersteer to lean.

You do not have to be aware of doing it to do it.

By steering slightly left you can lean right and its the lean that makes you turn.

This is beacuse of the angle that the fork is to the vertical.

If the front fork angle was back under the bike and not out in front, then to lean the bike you would need to turn the handlebars in the direction that you wanted to go.

Is countersteering what speedway riders do - you see them teararsing round the track, always steering left but with the handlebars pointing to the right?
