Im currently doing a few lessons in preperation for my DAS. I keep thinking of questions which I could do with answering.

1. When in a 30 zone and say following a slow moving vehicle (tractor) is it ok to overtake (as long as you dont exceed 30)? (mirror -> lifesaver -> indicate -> lifesaver over left shoulder). Also is there a need to indicate? and is there a need to indicate when going back into the lane?

2. When travelling down a dual carriageway and overtaking (mirror -> lifesaver -> indicate -> overtake -> left lifesaver) do you need to indicate to move back into the left lane?

3. When overtaking parked cars down a road you do a lifesaver before you move out, do you need to do a lifesaver to move back over to the centre left of the lane?

4. When coming to a stop at a junction should you put your left leg down or right?

5. If you lock the back brake whilst doing an emergency stop is that an automatic fail (even if you let off then re-apply)?

More to come probably but thats all I can think of at the moment. Cheers.

Oh another thing.

6. What indicators show you are in a 20 zone? I know if there is street lighting it indicates its a 30 unless stated otherwise.

Hi

1. It is fine to overtake as long as it fits the following rules, is it safe?, is it legal?

2. You don't need to indicate to move back into the left hand lane.

3. The examiner will expect you to perform a life saver before moving back to the center of the lane (just incase a parked car moves off).

4. Generally on test it would be your left leg (so that you can cover the rear brake)

5. It depends, if you feel the rear brake locking up, just let go and reapply.

6. In a 20 zone there will be road calming measures e.g. slalom, sleeping policemen etc.. down the village there are reminder signs as well.

For no 4 there looking for a safe controlled stop. So as long as you don’t lock up the back and up weaving all over the place like a loon you will be ok. Just remember not to sit in the middle of the road but have a good look about and move into the curb remembering not to block and driveways.

But as with every thing practise your emergency stop and U-turns till you have them sorted. Then keep practising till your sick of the sodding things and it is second nature.

Yo do not need to indicate unless you are crossing into the next lane. If you are are crossing over into the oncoming lane, you also do not need to indicate as this is not your lane. Do not indicate when pulling back in either, wether you change lanes or not. You can use a hand signal if you wish, but you must do a lifesaver before pulling back.

You will not fail the emergency stop if you lock up as long as you release and reapply (this is what happened to me.) The examiner sees it as dealing with the situation correctly.

When you enter a 20mph zone there will be a sign to tell you, and an end sign when the road becomes 30mph again.

Is it not a good idea though, because cars behind you may try overtaking you, indicating shows them what you intend to do.

It is about what you should do not what happens out on the road as the car shouldn’t undertake.

Also point out if there room for a car to under take why are you out in the opposing lane?

With regard to the foot down question, when you're stationary it should ALWAYS be the left foot. They call it 'safety position' (clutch in, footbrake on) and I think it'll count as an error if you put your right foot down.

Ill put what I mean into a situation. Going along a country lane doing 50mph following a car, there is a car behind you, you want to overtake because the speed limit is 60, in a car you would indicate to let both the driver you are overtaking and any cars behind you your intentions.

Which is the scenario above, surely I want people to know im overtaking so I indicate?

You shouldn’t indicate when performing an over take for one simple reason

Cars/other road users may think your turning right.

This can lead to cars turning in front of you as they believe you’re going to turn right as well.

Indicators are use to indicate changes of direction not road position the only exception in changing lane on a duel carriageways.

You are obviously going to do a lifesaver before overtaking, and this is usually indication to following traffic that you are about to do something. (If they are observant drivers of course.)
