a couple of weeks ago, a twat did a u-turn on me and knocked me off my bike. causing £900 worth of damage to my brand new speed triple. would have been worse if i hadn't had mushrooms.
my brand new shoei raid 2 also took a bash, and though the outer skin is not cracked, but a little gouged, i'm loath to use it again for fear of the protective inner lining being compromised. can i send it to shoei for testing as i could have done with an arai. or will i just have to bite the bullet and buy another one until the whole insurance thing is sorted out? Sad

If it's the other party's fault and you are claiming on their insurance claim for your helmet, leathers, gloves and boots as well Thumbs Up

Shoei don't offer an x-raying service either. Buy a new helmet and wait for the payout.

Glad you are alright though Thumbs Up

I'd go with Joe on this one. Make sure that the other party's insurance will cover it and go and find a real expensive new lid! Wink

You post made me chuckle!

get a new skid lid. it isnt worth the risk. i did the same with my 1 and a half month old agv rossi rep (one of the top models at the time worth £250 ish)

just bit the bullet and bought an arai. its saved a chunk from your head. time to get a new lid. or next time it might not work.

thanx guys. i'm very surprised that shoei don't seem to have this service, but no worries. i'll just have to wait and kill this guy's insurance, tho surprise, surprise, he is trying to deny liability

At the end of the day, how much is your head worth??

Be alot safer to get a new lid, because it could be costly the next time some idiot his you.

as a guideline, i've had 4 crashes. everytime my heads hit the floor. 2 of the crashes my head hit the same part of the helmet. just think if it'd been the same helmet the second time it might not have been strong enough to deal with the impact.

The strength of the helmet shell would be fine. The outer shell is very difficult to damage (try smashing an old one with a hammer, you are unlikely to do more than mark the paint). Years ago in PB they had a test of helmets, with one pic being a guy in a neck brace holding his helmet. He was wearing it when his head was run over by a lorry.

What is affected is the lining of the helmet. This compresses. It acts like the crumple zone in a car giving the head a fraction more space to decellerate.

All the best

Thumbs Up .

Just thought I would say to stop people thinking that there are no cracks so the helmet must be OK.

All the best

I had to replace an Arai after I hit a barn owl at 80mph (me, not the owl, fool Very Happy ) on the A31. Apart from not wanting to clean all the blood and crap off the lid, I could feel where the liner had compressed after the impact. I was seeing stars for about 100 yards so it was quite a hit.

If I was in the situation of claiming off someone elses insurance after a crash, I'd buy the lid, keep the receipt and old lid and lob it on the bill. You might want to be sure that the driver won't be able to escape liability though, before you buy.

Cheers

Grim
