I've been thinking about this. On Sunday I was hoiking a few on the way over to Annabella's house, and after I'd decided enough was enough (was getting near a village) I started riding more sensibly.

I took a shortcut through the back streets of the village, avoiding the main road through it (loads of parked cars), and when i got to the other end, rejoined the main road from a sideroad.

As I did, a police car went past, with the blues going, and gave me a rather suspicious look. It crossed my mind that he might be looking for me, so once he was out of sight, and I was out of the village, I got the bike up to full chat, and before long was sitting outside Annabella's house, and hopefully unfindable.

At the same time, Annabella was also driving up to her house (further behind me), and passed the nice straight backroad (where I'd been pulling wheelies) at the same time the filth got there.
She said the went *really* slowly down the straight, and at the end, turned their lights off and started driving normally again.

Now, I can only assume that they *were* looking for me, possibly after a tip-off from somebody near-by (there's one or two houses near there that may have heard me) Very Happy

So... my question is, what would have happend had he stopped me, or caught me in the act, waving my front end about in the air? Shocked

Have any of you been stopped/caught for doing wheelies? What happened?

Its driving dangerously fool. Lol Laughing
I pulled a wheelie on my TS50 once, sat on the back, full revs, and clutch.
A copper pulled me and I think he didn’t do me because the wheelie was so lame, he did say don’t do it again.
I pulled a wheelie past a cop car I didn’t notice but I don’t think knew the front wheel was up as I went passed them.

Hi

Something like failing to be in proper control of the vehicle.

All the best

depends what mood their in etc , i have been out on a quiet mountain road wheelying and doing stoppies and a police volvo stopped to watch for a while , they seemed to be quite enjoying it
and gave me a wave when they drove off .

my thinking is if you safe on a quite road with no other traffic they will probably leave you alone.

But surely if you can sustain it, standing, one handed, waving at the crowd you have excellent control! Very Happy

The thing to remember is....what if something/someone ran out infront of you while you're on your back wheel. Could you bring it down and stop safely as quick as you could if you had both wheels on the road? I think not, therefore it's dangerous driving/riding.

unless they catch you in the act they cannot proove it was you. (witnesses useless without getting the reg plate, as a yellow bike is just a yellow bike) if they catch you, it is as kickstart says. not being in control of the vehicle. dont know what the punishment is though. probably 3 points and a fine.

as for doing it on a quiet road. probably depends on what officer you get (car driving bike hater being the worst scenario, bike cop the best in general) and their mood. they may let you off, or not. or just watch as previously stated.

On the way to work there is a a little 'traffic calming' bit on a blind ish righthand bend (dunno why, 'cos it's a dead end) - the road goes to a single lane with oncoming traffic having priority.

As I often do, I was wheelying towards it on my DR. See a car bonent coming round the corner and think I should probably put it down. Then the rest of the cars follows with blue lights on top and all sorts of markings, oops.

I do put the front down before the traffic calming bit and stop as they have priority. They come through the single lane bit really slowly then stop next to me and wind down a window.
'Nice wheely' - not sure if that's sarcastic or not.
They ask me where I'm going etc, I say to my work and at least I'm doing wheelies somewhere pretty deserted with no pedestrains etc. They tell me to find somewhere even more remote to practice and leave it at that.

If I hadn't put the front end down in a controlled fashion in a safe manner I suspect they may have been a bit more annoyed.

Hmm.... now for the next question then...

Where have you found that's remote enough for some "safe" wheelies? Very Happy

I usually use an industrial estate in Reading; right by a train line and no real traffic out of hours. A bit bumpy though, so wouldn't mind somewhere better.

I didn't ask the police to suggest me somewhere Razz.

True story:

Mate of mine used to deliver pizzas when he was at uni. He was busy wheelying the company c90 down causwayhead in Edinburgh (after getting the mainstand down round Potterow corner. It's the law!) when he was pulled in by a cop car.

The coppers told him "Right, as far as we are concerned that is driving without due care and attention. We'll let you off only if you can prove you are in full control of the vehicle by keeping it on the back wheel 'till you are out of our sight.". He duly did and turned off as soon as possible.

Goes to show that at least some of them have a sense of humour.

Sounds like they were checking the ditches in case you came off. Nice of them to check.

Interesting point re where to practice. IIRC One of the laws the sneaky government sneaked through in that load of bills is that road traffic act now applies everywhere. Not just roads - everywhere.

I remember a debate on a different forum about some guy being cautioned with "drunk in charge of a motor vehicle" which carries a ban. He was in a camper van enjoying a bottle of wine, in a camp-site. Clearly camped for the night - with an awning attached.

Their reason - the keys were in the ignition. Silly eh?

Not only that, but there's really nasty speed bumps fairly regularly (make good wheelies launch points, though not with these slippy macadams on my trx Sad ). Some of the road is used by school kids, but not that many.

When our company moved here, one of the sales guys asked if the speed bumps could be taken out because his tarty low slung car ground out on them Confused.

G, what is your stigma about macadams? Are they really /that/ bad? Ive got a brand new pair coming for 65 quid delivered... So since mine are barely legal i snapped that up, but seriously, whats the crack with them?
