Using slip roads - advice?

Just had a discussion and got conflicting advice. This is from some riders who've done the advanced training.

Basically if on a slip road that goes down onto join a motorway/dual which side should you be on?

Rider 1 says to be on the right as you'll be seen quicker by those on the road you're joining. If the slip road goes upwards to join the road then keep left.
Rider 2 says keep on the left (for either down or up slip road) as you'll have the better view across to the road you're joining and more escape options.

So who is right?, which is better?

I suspect both are right in what they've been told but someone changed the advanced training advice.
If so, what's the current thinking? (I don't have a copy of the latest Roadcraft to hand )

I'd say number 2 - best to go in slow so that it's easier to make speed corrections if the need arises - more time to react.

One thing to remember though, if 2 vehicles are travelling the same speed in a parallel direction, the human eye won't register it - so always make a conscious decision to look into the bypass/motorway you're about to enter.

if your road speed doesn't match that of the traffic, and your anticipation of where to join the flow isnt correct, it dosent matter what lane you are in.

in my view these two things are head and shoulders above which lane you should be in.
i would say 99.9% of slipway incidents are caused by poor judgement of speed and timing.

Another problem with the 'stick to the left' rule is that if Mr Nobber on his superdupersports bike comes down the slip road at 150mph then he may wel jeopardise you by overtaking you as you join the carriageway, sitting to the right protects your position.

Whichever one is not being used, so you have more space to react should someone decide to stop on the slip road.

Beyond that, just decide on the gap you are going to use and aim for it, adjust speed upwards or downwards depending on where the gap is.

I always tend to use the left, you have more time to see the situation, the relative position of all the triaffic before you join, and you join the motorway further ahead giving you more time to build up to the appropriate speed and slip into the traffic flow.

On slip roads, I just concentrate on getting on the road safely, theres plenty of time to pass everyone once you're on there.

Im usually on the right, and dap into an convienient gap.

You hve to ride a bit agressively without indicators.

In my opinion, you should stop worrying about whether they've seen you or not, and just assume that they haven't.

Then ride in such a way that regardless of what they do, you'll still be fine.

ie. Find your gap, and take it. Ride with intent, and don't rely on the other road users to be aware of you.

i personally dont think that there is a definiaive answer, as you should adjust to the situation and ride accordingly:)
