I was thinking about getting a really cheap bike purely for winter use, as I dont want to drop my faired bike. I was o.k last winter with it, but if it gets worse this year, then I would rather drop some piece of cr@p on the road.

What would be the best bike for this purpose? prefer something that is easy fix and bounces back up. 125cc upwards.

I have fully comp insurance, but would rather keep my NCB.

I am asking this now, so it gives me enough time to do any repairs to a bike.

CG125 CB125 CB250

Anything 80s+ with no plastics, no more than a simple twin engine and less than 250cc... dont forget 125s tax is a meer £15 a year! + petrol is rediculously cheap...

Currently fixing up a cg125 (still), i'd suggest you find something thats got a running engine (this has) and no parts rusted beyond useability (this also has Sad but only cheepo bits)

Light as pissible, a crosser would be a goodun but they are very high on the "likely to be stolen" list Sad

I want mine as a spare, emergency use only type of thing, if it was going to be used for winter only it would need to be passenger capable so i'd be looking minimum 400cc, so depends what your planing on really...

Budget wise? low, about £300, it only has to last the winter and drag my 9 and a half stone 30 miles a day, to and from work.

CG sounds good, bullet proof engines! not a lot to go wrong on them.

The cruicial thing is being in the right place at the right time, i got my cg for free, it needs (or its getting at least)... new tank (or serious clean up), new seat pan, new rear mudguard, possible new front fork stanctions, new bearings new chain sprockets...

Thing is The whole lot probably wont cost more than £100, if that.. thats useing official honda parts...

Thinking of makeing it a rat, useing some moto-x bits from similar sized machines Very Happy

Agree with the MZ too, i'd really like one myself Very Happy sturdy Cool

Keep an eye on forums (100% biker e.t.c.) and ebay, also the local rag...

Rather than looking for a specific bike, I would keep your eye out for bargain bikes within a specific price range - ok you're probably not going to want a CR500 with knobbly tyres for icy roads, but thre's a pretty broad range of bikes that will work.

Remember 125s are often worth a bit more than their larger capacity counterparts, due to the Learner market.

True, I think I would need something with a bit of weight to it, too.

Oi! That's mine! Smile

(it would make a great winter bike though - totally bulletproof)
