This is a request. After my accident most people tell me to get a car- no- i hate cars. My sister saw my accident and i was told to 'think of her' when she sees my new bike sitting outside. Also i was told about the 'stress' that everyone had been through when i was in hospital. Ok fair enough- everyones helped me out no end, but i need some convincing arguments why getting a bike is better than a car.

The few i thought of were:

1. Cheaper to run.
2. London Traffic will be easier to get through
3. I cant drive.....................

I need some more convincing arguments please guys! Shocked

Getting a bike might statistically make you more likely to be dead on the outside but getting a car bloody definitely would be likely to make you dead on the inside. Wink

Tell them it's something you're passionate about and that it makes you happy. Say you're sorry if it bothers them but you don't want to lose out on that.

On a bike i will be thrown from a crash, whereas in my cafe of doom my feet/legs will be crushed as the brake pedal is forced upwards and then add general trapping possibilities.

Okay, I could probably list some ideas, but I really don't think thats the right way to 'win' this 'debate'.

The pro's and con's of bikes aren't going to affect your family's feeling of you being on a bike. If it saves you time, thats hardly going to win you any favours when your mother replies with "Whats an extra 5 minutes son when you could be knocked off and killed and leave me "sonless" ". Or whatever that word may be.

Biking. It's obviously in your blood, it's what makes you happy and conveniently, it also gives you advantages too (introduce your list). It's what makes you happy mate, they won't want to respect that but it's something they have to deal with.

I have to say, I hope I am never placed in your situation. My parents know fine well I go on bikes because it's my life but they still wouldn't understand if I crashed and wanted to get back on again.

You're fighting a losing battle. Just respect their wishes, hear them out and then jsut say "I don't want to upset you but...blah blah blah". I'm not going to write it out for you, but it should all be 'in' there. No doubt this crash ahs brought you all closer, feelings strengthened, so time to say what you feel.

YES!

That's the one ill use.

You're right-i understand what they've been through but it's my choice. I dont want to die in a car crash. How guilty would they feel. At least on a bike they can we 'we told him so!'.

Or not dying at all is preferable!

Also your family and their hapiness too.

Just got to find a good balance, the former being favoured though if it doesn't work out.

P.S Thats the thing though Oni - you DON'T understand what they've been through. Just have to try and respect their wishes, at the same time, not getting caught up in what you want to do.

Any thoughts on a new bike? Are you still in hospital? (Do hospitals have internet access these days? One in dundee has)

you wont convince them except by a few years with no accidents and even that is a long shot

you just need to convince yourself that you can ride safe enough not to be a danger to yourself and to be skilful enough to avoid the dangerous actions of others

If we wanted to be completely safe we would never do anything with the slightest risk and most things have some risk.

Whether you are in a car or on a bike, you're not safe. When you get out of the bath, you are not safe. When you cook, you are not safe. When you sleep, you are not safe. When you walk down the stairs, you are not safe. When you eat, you are not safe. When you put on your trousers, you are not safe.

Nothing is safe. Life itself is an uncurable terminal illness. Sitting around in fear of life itself is no way to carry on. It's best to get the most out of life while you still have it. Tomorrow is an unknown, we could all be dead by then.

All you can do is try and protect yourself the best you can. Take fewer, lesser risks, and take extra care. Even taking as much care as you can, you or they could still die tomorrow. No matter how the person died, their family would feel similarly.

I should also like to point out that cars are very unsafe. Sure they have better protection against accidents nowadays, but they are still death boxes on wheels.

You want to know the most dangerous place to be? In bed. More people die there than anywhere else. Wink

That sums up the whole arguement in two paragraphs! Thumbs Up
enjoy each moment this beautiful short unpridictable thing we call life gives us!

If you did die on a bike after that, they would feel alot more guilty than if it were in a car. In a car there is more chance of surviving thats been proven. But they would only think they didnt try hard enough to stop you and for the rest of there lifes that would eat away at them. It would change there lifes and how they look at it for the rest of the time they live.

Ive been in the same situation except i didnt win with my parents. They told me i wasnt allowed to keep a bike under the same roof as them ever again. Then they helped me pay for a car etc. In all honesty i do still have a bike kept at a friends house but i admit i do not ride it all as often as before now. Tell them you will get a car if you can keep the bike as well. Then just buy a really cheap car prehaps. They are better than i first thought, although if it came to the choise between them both i would have a bike...

Some advanced riding training might be worth while - you can't avoid everything, but it should give you a good insite into how to do it 99% of the time - you'll be suprised how many possible hazards you've probably ignored etc.

When I'm driving in the car, my attention is about 50% on the road, and 50% thinking of other things, or playing with the stereo, etc.

On my bike, my attention is always at least 95% on the road. There's nothing much else to look at on a bike. No stereo, no passenger that you can talk to, etc.
