Am I right in thinking that chicken strips are the unused inch or so of tyre from the outside edge? If so, how do I get rid of them? Should I be leaning over further?

I've read stuff on the web and I get the impression that chicken strips are a bit embarrasing if you have them!

Any advice welcomed!

BTW I ride a '96 CBR600, but I've never really pushed it that hard!

You're correct.

Most people seem to have chicken strips of some size. How do you get rid of them? Deck that bike out!

aye thats what they are, and you get rid of them by leaning the bike over more. you can try as first getting some good lean on roundabouts, but make sure your tyres are warmed up!!!
built up your confidence up slowly Thumbs Up

What Silver said - though I'd add that I know people who are good enough riders to go in fast groups on trackdays - yet have (thin) chicken strips on their road bikes. It's not always safe or sensible to approach the limits of lean and adhesion on a public road Wink Thumbs Up

As everyone has said above the bigger the chicken strip the less you are leaning, try going 1 or 2mph faster around some nice corners that you know well and just gradually increase the speed, you'll be surprised how much lower you have to lean by just going 5mph faster, once i got my knee down is when i got most of my confidence when leaning my bike over, but it just takes practice although the bike will be able to lean ALOT more than you think

Good luck (just make sure your tyres are warm first) Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Just be carefull. more lean usually mean more speed carried into corners. It's a fine judgement and if you get it wrong it could see you on the wrong side of the road into on coming traffic.
And NEVER break mid corner if you think you've gone in too hot. It will immediately sit the bike up and straighten your line. Unless your going miles too fast (in which case your fook anyhow) just counter-steer and accelerate through.

I think it's not sensible to push lean angles. They tend to come with your confidence anyway. The lean angles I use now would have scared me shitless when I first started but they just feel natural now.

One more thing....be carefull if you following a more experienced rider. You may find yourself going into corners (specially ones that tighten) faster than you are confident at riding. I've pulled more than one inexperienced rider out of a hedge coz he was following a group and trying to stay with the pace.

My friends used to give me stick about my chicken strips. I'd rather have chicken strips than a fooked up body and bike. This is just another one of those "I can do something you can't do" things. Like not wearing the right trainners or clothes to school. It always ends in tears. I don't see the point of leaning a bike over in a racing track style if i'm not on a racing track.

I can usually keep up in the fast group on a trackday and I'm sure my road bike has big chicken strips.

It is shod with Macadams though, not a tyre I'd like to push too much.

Don't feel that you have to get rid of them for the sake of it.
However it is a good indication of how far you are leaning, if you're wanting to go faster.

I would use an empty roundabout with a good surface for playing.

Gradually increase your speed. Make sure you go faster /slowly/ and you should notice the tyre starting to just lose traction if you reach the limits.
This start with the nose twitching in, then a feeling of movement from the back end. At that point you know you can't go faster without doing something else.

Another thing to remember if you are going to increase your lean is that you must take your time because your chicken strips are effectively brand new rubber and they need scrubbing in just the same as a new tyre before they will grip properly.

The ground clearance of your bike makes a diffference too. No good going to lean it right over if you just end up scraping a peg or a bracket!

T'other half says if you just want to do it for effect, run on soft tyres for a bit! Rolling Eyes I think he was joking....... Confused

Personally, my chicken strips are only as narrow as they are because he goes out & plays on my bike every now and again. Embarassed

Not bothered though, I do corners in my own time and am slowly but surely getting smoother, faster and more confident each time I am out.

Wotcha.

Don't believe everything you read on the 'web. Cool

I've never really had the urge to lean my bike so far over that bits of it hit the floor, or bits of ME hit the floor. I like my knees just how they are Laughing There again, bits of my bike do hit the floor occasionally Embarassed Must remember to slow down a tad when fully loaded with camping gear.

You know you've done something seriously wrong when you get your knee down whilst riding a trike Mr. Green

It's all to do with confidence.
I use to have shitty old tyres on my bike and they quite rightly had chicken strips. I couldnt see how i could lean any more to get rid of them. I thought thos who lean over that far must be nut cases!

I recently got a new set of sticky rubber and now i have no chicken strips at ALL!
Even when cold they are better than the old ones were warm. The bike feels glued to the road and feels like it wants to lean forever Very Happy

No chicken strips means the rider has a good set up they are happy with.

Haha I like it!

I keep scraping my bloody exhaust on the ground when I hit big bumps. I also keep scraping my toes, bloody pegs are too low on the teapot. Rolling Eyes

Some bikes are impossible to rid of "chicken strips" I had a blade years and that always had at least 1/4 inch strips, any further lean and the back end let go, dont listen to the hipe, it just not true.

Im still real new to this biking thing and have a fair pair myself. Ive found that on the way to work there is a nice s bend overpass which has allowed me to gauge my skill and its steady improvement. That is, I used to take the bridge really slow but gradually I have managed to add a little speed each time.
Its a great feeling to be able to whip over it at the speed limit or a smidge above.
Like I said it's just been a real handy way to keep track of my ability to take bends/corners. Of course as time has passed Ive needed to lean just a little more each time.

Just have to look for a new tighter one now Very Happy

Just don't get complacent. Riding the same route every day means you know the road inside out. Get a tightening corner on an unknown road and you could still come unstuck.

I'm not sure if grinding the footpegs will get rid of the (reducing) strips on my tyres or not, but they're fixed and I really don't want them to dig in. Thumbs Down

go on a trackday Smile

I'm just back from Cadwell and my tyres are nicely scrubbed to the edge now. Before that I had about 1/2 an inch left. Track tarmac is just SO much more sticky and much smoother than a road surface..

Sorry but this is total bollox. A blade will lean ALL the way. There's nothing to touch down before you do so no pegs are gonna dig in and the bike is designed to use the whole of the available lean angle. If you were loosing the back end before getting rid of the CS then it's either because you had the suspension set up very very wrong (but even then it would still use all the trye I suspect). Or it was shagged.
Also if anything was gonna let go it would more likely be the front end.
Are you sure it wasn't just your bottle that was lost and not the back end Wink

im leaning my ped over more and more on the way to work due to 10 round abouts to get there but even on a ped they can be got rid of to a set extent!

people are right the tip is to do it just a little bit faster not 10mph or 20mph! and lean that little more off and its done and dusted

im limited to the amount i can lean due to side stand and exshaust but ive managed to scrape the side stand some many times

Tyre pressures are important.

I had mine right up as i take a pillion alot, i dropped them down from 36 to 30 as the bike felt better. the low pressure gave a greater contact patch, allowed the tyres to warm up quicker and got rid of them strips!

Just use sandpaper or a blow torch if you want that 'bubbley trackday legend' effect!
