How long will a regulary serviced 600cc engine last?

I'm currently looking at a few bikes around the 30k miles mark and would like my next bike to be as hassle free as my last one.

Hi

How long is a piece of string. Thrashed silly from cold and the life could be quite short. Well cared for and it will last ages. Bigger problem is some of the more expensive service items needing doing (eg, shims).

Think one of the services on the newer ZX6R is (according to Kawasaki) hideously expensive as they specify replacing all the hoses (most people would not bother).

All the best

Keith

Remember to give the suspension and other moving parts a good check, as they're getting on a bit, you may have to factor in replacements (not always that expensive though.)

There were some group tests in one of th emotorcycle magazines last year, where they tested 4 blokes (general road riders, not editors) on GSXR600K3/4's to see if they could discover which one had done the most milage, they were all over 25000 and only one bloke got it right.

Apparently, the one with the highest milage had been riden fast everywhere and was a realy peach!

The one that had done 25000 careful miles and was never thrashed was really dodgy and felt knackered. The other three guys chose that one.

Milage isn't always a problem, it's riding style.

One careful/lady owner can sometimes means it's gunna be a ropey engine! (no offence to women there, some are a dam sight faster than me, I was refering to the typical car type private sale advert!)

Few, that's the politically correct get out of jail free card played! Laughing

I would echo what the other guys are saying. 30k neednt be that big a deal if the engine's been religiously serviced and well maintained. I'd be looking for a fully dealer-stamped service book with all the big services done on time. If it sounds OK with no strange noises, rattles or rumbles, then IMO it probably is OK. I suppose it depends on how much you're prepared to spend on a bike with that kind of mileage...

I'd be extra-careful when checking the rest of the bike over: rear shock, forks, head bearings, condition of brake calipers, wheel bearings, transmission (for soggy cush drive) etc. 30k worth of wear can often have these bits totally shagged.

I would not worry about that too much. Far too easy for a dealers to just stamp the book to make it look like a bike has a service history when they are selling a bike (we were told that this is the reason that Renault will not accept as service book as proof of servicing for warrenty claims, insisting on receipts instead).

Also you want to know what was done and whether they were real full services as specified in the schedule, or just a quick oil change.

All the best

Keith

Depends on the motor-highly strung small motors (sports 400 owners beware) can start popping at 40k or under, whereas a big low strung engine like the FJ1200s can go on well past 120k when serviced regularly.

Regularity of service is the thing, make sure it gets done at good intervals rather than pouring in the lastest synthetic oil and not bothering for 10,000 miles.

Hi

My general rule of thumb is to use half the red lines worth of revs until it is full warm. As your red line is ~14000 (I think) then 6K~7k is fine.

All the best

Very much so, dealer stamps can often be used as they are meant but often they get abused aswell

It's quiet easy to find brand new service books with the first dozen pages simply stamped allowing people to fill in as required.

Naughty naughty.
