PostPosted: 15:06 - 15 Jul 2005    Post subject: Bizarre Accident Reply with quote

Or is it? Does this kind of thing happen often? I'm new to biking, and thought I was being quite safe until..........

I'm sitting third in a queue of traffic behind a Corsa (Never a more aptly named car) at a set of roadworks lights. Even left good space between him and me.

For some reason he hits the gas and rams the Merc in front of him. Strange, I thought. Then check this, he sticks it in reverse and floors it!!!!

I start to paddle back but too slow. Tank in the gonads! I jump off the bike, and he keeps going!! He pushed the bike across a keep clear road marking that was behind me, into the car behind me. Tyres squealing and all that!!

I smashed my fist on his window shouting at him (Intended to break the window but failed) A young fella walked up, and calmly told me to ease up. He went to the drivers side, leaned through and turned the car off. Cool dude!!

Turns out he was about 80 driving an auto. He didn't even know what was happening.

After all the details were exchanged I cadged a lift off him to my office. He must be the worst driver I have ever had the discomfort of being a passenger with. As we were driving he asked me if I was involved in the accident!!! I was sitting in his passenger seat with my lid on my lap, leathers on!! I don't think he knows he ran over a motorbike.

Had to share that. I thought it was bizarre. There's me worrying about cars ramming me, cars pulling out in front of me at junctions, changing lanes on me and all that. But reversing into me!!!

Still nobody hurt. That's the main thing.

Good luck all.

Nothing on earth would have persuaded me to get into the car of the person who'd just shown he had no idea what he's doing there!

Don't OAP's have to re-take their test these days?

And as Bendy said, I wouldn't have got in the car with him. Confused

Not only I have not have got into the car with him I would have taken his keys off him and waited till the police arrive before handing them over to them.

This driver is not fit to be on the roads

No if no buts he should have his license taken away immediately

Been old is no excuse for shity driving we must all be able to meet the standard every time we drive/ride not just once 60 years ago.

It scares me when I see 90 yr old ladies just about, being able to peer over the steering wheel of a huge car.

OAP's don't have to re-take the test at all. They just have to re-apply for a driving licence every 3 years. Completely pointless IMO.

Very frustrating, this oldie should be taken off the road, not as a punishment but to stop the unco-ordinated, half blind, half deaf fool from crushing a padestrian! I say fool because they should know when they are no longer capable of driving.

Hi

Not sure about retests. Suspect the average 60 year old is far safer than the average 17 year old, and the degradation in driving skills will vary greatly between different people.

Some 80 year olds will still be good drivers. Others would be a liability even on the footpath at 60.

A regular retest would be a bureaucratic nightmare, even if you made it every 5 years (and massive changes can happen in driving in that kind of time).

All the best

Keith

Hahaha.

I hope youre going to try and get him prosecuted or something though? If he could do that to two cars whilst at lights, imagine the danger he could potentially put kids in... Could easily kill a few people with that level of stupidity.

and remember though that that driver is probable safe because its SPEED that kills right remember that. thats why the government wont make them take a retest their perfectly safe as they dont speed. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Rolling Eyes

I agree here, there are just to many older people driving for this to be feasible, BUT I do think an eyesight test every few years would be possible. IMO the majority of poor driving from AOP's is down to them not being able to see!

It could even be done through an opticians rather than police/instuctor. All it would need is a signed form to say they meet the required standard (12/20) which then has to be submitted with the re-application of the licence...

Did he offer me sweets. Pissing myself laughing!!

I needed a lift to my office, about two miles away, and my gonads were aching. I weren't going to walk. I was also pushed for time as I had to work. It's a shit when people rely on you, you can't even have an accident without them moaning about you being late!

It was an experience being with him. When he turned the car around in the garage, I had to turn the steering wheel for him as he was going to hit a parked car!! I used to work in the garage, and my old boss was watching. It was his car the old boy was about to hit.

The bike is mashed. Fairing, handle bars, twisted forks, engine casing, indicators and a footrest as far as I can see.

A biker mate of mine thinks it's funny that all the scratches go backwards. Like how many bikes have accidents in reverse??

Do you know, I'm so stupid, I even felt sorry for the guy, cos he's got to lose his licence. It will really take away all his independance. Sod him. Better the bastard ain't on the road!! Now, cos of him, I'm back stuck in a poxy car sitting in poxy traffic. Evil or Very Mad

Strangely enough, I am laughing about it. I suppose for a bike accident and to not get hurt I've got to be laughing.

Just a thought.

How long have driving tests been around? I'd bet half the oldies have never even taken a test.

Then again the old bike test was just a ride round the block with the examiner standing on the street corner, wasn't it?

Since 1935, so 70 odd years.

Rather more than that although they did not have the U turns. That style of test finished not much over a decade ago.

All the best
