Catagory C is repairable and usualy just plastics. But I would still get a quotation for the repairs needed and then renegotiate the price if need be. If you want all OE replacement plastics it can cost a fookin fortune. E.g. if you were to build a GSXR1000 from OE parts it would cost you over £35,000 Shocked

hi,
thanks for the reply, the damage to the bike seems to have been repaired, i've only seen the photo's, i was concerned if the frame had been bent or something worse,if that was the case would it still be classed as cat c damage?

cheers

No that would be major damage. Before buying I would ask to take all plastics off and have a good look. You also get to see that all the fasteners and fixing points line up ok. Sometimes the fastening points get knocked out of place and it makes striping it a bastard.

One more thing. Check the area of the frame where any crash bungs might have been. Sometimes they can cause more damage than it appears at first glance. The metal ones that are frame mounted can get pushed into the frame and cause dents or cracks if dropped at speed.

Cat C means written off on cosmetics and things like subframe, wheels or forks.. it means the bike can be fully repaired and used on the road legally without replacing the frame (i.e no damage at all to frame etc.)

Sometimes a bike can be cat c just on bodywork etc alone.

Buying a Cat C can be quite cheap as you've noticed but good luck selling it!! It's impossible, people are so put off despite it being a bargain that it makes it really really difficult to sell let alone make your money back and don't even think about buying it to re-sell for profit, it won't happen.

I've had to drop the price of my SV650 considerably AND tax/mot etc it and it STILL hasn't sold despite being a cracking little bike...

So, if you don't intend to sell it any time soon and don't mind losing yet more money on re-sale then go for it.. if it looks and rides good then who cares?

And you never know, you might get lucky with re-selling and make your money back, but like I say, don't count on it!!

Steve,

I bought a 2000W CBR600FX for £2k that had cat C damage. It had been subject to a scratched frame and some fairing damge.
Its been awesome so far as it only had 7k miles on it.

If the bike rides fine and your happy to have an expensive bike on the cheap then go for it, at the end of the day if its safe and it rides well, if you get it cheap, who gives a shit? Go ahead and get it, insure it TPFT and live the dream with the knowledge youve bought a fast smart bike at half the price!

Where the hell would you find cat c bikes?

This sounds like an interesting route for me to go down to find another cheap bike! Very Happy

You see them on auto-trader from time to time.

Cat D is even less damaged I think?

There are 4 categories of write off

Category A must be cubed - no part can be salvaged for re-use (usually reserved for vehicle fires)

Category B Cannot be repaired (I think this is possible in rare cases with a special license) parts can be salvaged

Category C - Repairs are more costly than the value of the vehicle - can be repaired but the Police are informed as they'll want to know why you're doing it and check it's not a ringing operation

Category D - Repairs more than 60% of the vehicles value or recovered after insurance pay out. Insurance companies write off above 60% just in case the costs escalate.

These can be repaired and insured but with complications - they will always have write off against them when anybody does a check so their value is reduced even if perfect this means some insurance comppanies won't touch them.

You will find that before you can get a V5 or tax a written-off bike you will need to have it inspected by the DVLA, not to check that the damage has been repaired but to check that the frame number matches to the V5 and the bike is not a ringer.

From the home office website:

Quote:
7. Under VIC, in any case where someone seeks to obtain a V5 from DVLA and/or to re-license the vehicle, they will be advised firstly to submit their vehicle for a VIC inspection (in its repaired state). Provided this inspection confirms that the subject vehicle is the original, a VIC certificate will be issued a V5 will be issued to the keeper and the vehicle can be re-licensed.

Knowing the DVLA there is probably a charge for this. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
