ha yeah, a big thumper trials bike engine and a tzr frame! Very Happy still, i like the looks. Interestingly original....

A big single... would it be a bit of a rough ride? i have a twin gs500 now and I'm after something a bit smoother?

The vibrations can be interesting, especially on a prolonged, higher speed run. Certainly not smoother than your GS and also slower. Loads more torque though, you would spend a lot less time changing gear.

If you are interested in the concept then also look at the yamaha srx600, MZ skorpion and (an older bike) honda CBX500.

I definately think there is a place for a big single road bike in the market, appeals to the cafe racer type crowd and they are usually very easy engines to live with (vibes and slowness aside). The honda CBX500 is a superb little bike, probably the best of the lot but getting old now.

yes LOTS of vibration off one of them.

they did a racing series many moons ago which was single cylinder only. It resulted in lots of bikes made from 250 frames and big dirtbike singles.

The power of the thing is quite poor for a 660cc lump, only giving about 49bhp and 115-120mph top speed. Not bad for a first bigger bike I suppose.

yeah vibrations..... but alot of overlanders use big singles, I know thats mainly cos they're simpler/reliable engines but still, it can't be that bad if they go across continents on them...

Not sure about it. I'm scanning ebay/biketrader at the moment for a cheap bike when i return, these seem to be cheap (around a grand) for newish bikes with low miles... I was thinking about a 400 but you're looking at more like 1500 and thats for a 10-15 yr old bike, thats almost certainly been ragged.

Stinkwheel, you really think it'll be slower than a GS500? my GS is about 45bhp i think, and probably heavier? I know I said I was after somthign smother, but I like the quirky-ness of it, and I bet it handles nicely with the tzr frame..

Hi

Those crossing large continents, especially on barely finished roads, are not likely to be cruising at high speed where the vibrations are worst.

The XTZ engined road bikes did tend to get a bit of a slagging off for the gear rations, with many tests complaining that they did not suit higher speed road work.

Power wise the GS is a claimed 51hp, while the XTZ engine is (in the MuZ Skorpian, probably the same for the SZR) a claimed 48hp.

It probably does outhandle the GS.

Just by luck I have an old copy of Bike magazine in my drawer with a bit on it. The full test was in the November 1996 edition. They say that it weighs about the same as a 400cc sports bike (dry weight 159kg). Problems are gearbox troubles and brake caliper corrosion. Top speed was 115mph (estimated for some reason), standing quarter in 14.2, 47hp@6500rpm and 50mpg average (14L fuel tank).

All the best

Keith

yeah cheers keith Thumbs Up

M GS is supposedly a hefty 186kg dry (a new fireblade weighs 179!!)...

So performance isnt much better, but it'll handle and brake better, has more torque and has a much sportier look and riding position... I'm tempted at the price they go for...

Suspect performance will only be a tiny bit better, and peak torque is probably better (although I suspect that the SZR is less flexible). I would try and get a spin on one.

All the best
