Read this in a different forum. Thought it may be VERY useful to ALL people. The following is copied and pasted.

PC dave Burlingham, a Police motorcycle rider trainer from North Yorkshire told them about the use of "ICE"

I C E (Immediate Contact Emergency)

He explained that when the emergency services are dealing with road traffic accidents, for example, if the casualty is unconcious they might consider using the casualty's own phone to contact the next of kin. Dave explained that the obvious difficulty associated with searching a mobile phone address book is not knowing exactly who to contact.

Apparently the ICE system was devised by Durham Constabulary and is currently working its way accross the contry.

Please adopt the ICE system...

By placing the person you would like contacting in an emergency on your mobile phone.

e.g.
ICE 1 (mum) 07786125872
ICE 2 (dad)
ICE 3 (wife)

etc etc

Its simple to do. It only takes 5 minutes and it could save lives.

I'd rather they loaded me into the ambulance instead of going through my pockets and fucking about with my phone.

what if your phone is pin-locked? Make more sense perhaps just to put a label on the back.

Oh, point of info: doesn't "ICE" actually stand for In Case of Emergency?

That's been bothering me too.

What information is my mum/dad/wife/childminder/gay lover/dog going to tell the emergency services that's going to prove so vital if I need emergency treatment?

Question

What if there's nobody home to answer the phone when the hospital/ambulance crew rings? Should we all modify our answer-phone messages to account for this possibility? Question Wink

That you're allergic to medication. Suppose they give you penacillin whilst you're unconscious? (If you were allergic to penacillin)

Get them to call Lawyers4U to meet you in A&E perhaps?

This "clever" idea surfaced just after the London bombings in one of those "send it to everyone you know" spams.

I can only guess that someone thought it would be a good idea to be able to assist in ID'ing the victims in future. Never mind that if you're in a bomb blast, the chances of your phone surviving if you don't are somewhere around zero.

For what it's worth, I have this on my phone, and they (paramedics) used it contact my Dad and he was at the hospital waiting for me. It was nice to have someone there when I finally came round. Didn't save my life, but at least it makes thier job that one bit easier. It's not like they don't have a difficult enough job.

Well I've put two into the phone, the home number and my dads mobile. I ride in North Yorkshire quite frequently and if this is the system they use, never know, might well help one day. Thumbs Up

On the note of dog tags, my parents brought me some back from New York while they were over there last month. Dont wear them, but they're in the wallet anyway. Razz

Aye, so in an emergency, what happens if your phone is broken (landed on it as you fell off your bike) or they just can't get an answer?

Do they a) treat you, which might kill you for all they know? Or b) not treat you and let you die? (It's for emergency use, remember Wink )

Fruit'n'nut, I agree with what you're saying, but if they've managed to get hold of someone, then it stops the whole problem in the first place.

On the other hand, if you do have an allergic reaction to a drug, then you're in the right place! Laughing

Fruit 'n Nut, it makes it easier. You will usally find that the driver will do the checking whilst the paramedic sees to you.

Like everyone said, it helps get vital info about medical history that may save them taking difficult decisions which could affect your life. Also allows loved ones to be informed, which will possibly leave them less concerned.

Phone locks only kick in if the phone is off. A keypad lock usually reveals how to deactivate itself. Contrary to popular belief, if no.s are stored on your sim card, they are pretty much indestructable. So in the event of you being a dead body in an explosion, that could well be one of the few things to go on.

It can only help having them there. How would it make things worse?

Sorted mine now, ICE 1 = 999. If I'm in an accident I'd rather like the ambulance service to be called first Very Happy

Just recieved this

ITS A HOAX !

Be very careful with this one - although the intention is great it is
unfortunately phase one of a phone based virus that is laying a path for
propagating very quickly. Passing it on is part of the virus
interestingly, such is the deviousness of the people who write these
things. We have already seen the "second phase" where a program is sent as
part of a ring-tone download that goes into your address book and looks
for something it recognises - you've guessed it, an address book entry
marked "ICE or I.C.E." or whatever. It then sends itself to the "ICE
list", charging you for the privilege

What it really does is activates a beacon that shows up on their really expensive head unit and then they nick yer phone and flogg it to buy that "bangin" carbon fibre spoiler
