o.k i've seen a bike that i want to buy, already looked it over in the flesh, going for a test ride on tues night. if the test ride goes well and everything seems sound then i am going to buy it there and then. now the problem that i have is the bike will need to be transported back to my house (2 hour journey).
going to get insurance sorted during the day for the bike as i am sure i want the bike. so riding it will be legal from that point of view, if the bike turns out to be a dud then i will cancel the insurance.
the problem is that the bike has been kept off the road so needs MOT/Tax, MOT is being sorted buy the owner but the bike will have no tax due to it not being insured for the road.
my question is if i ride the bike with no road tax what is the worst punishment that i could get from a copper if i get pulled? will be getting the tax the next day with a faxed copy of my cover note
i am guessing it is likely to be a producer, but not too sure.

Don't worry about it. I haven't displayed the tax disc on any of my bikes for the last four years. I have been stopped by the police twice in that time, got done for speeding the first time and was stopped to be generally hassled and inconvenienced on Heartside pass the second time. There was no disc on display either time and its absence was not commented upon. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. No tax = unroadworth.
Unroadworthy = no insurance.
You'd really have to piss the copper of for him to do that though. If you do get stopped just hope the plod's wife hasn't just left him and run over the cat as she pulled out the drive, to meet a bloke who looks a lot like you. |

You may end up with a minimal fine for failure to display a valid VEL but thats about it.... Tax doesn't affect your insurance in any way so don't worry.
Make sure that when you do tax it that you do it from the 1st of this month, not to start on the 1st of August
VEL is not the concern of the police anymore but no tax generally means no MOT or Insurance, provided to have a recipt for the vehicle and your going from the vendors address to yours you'll be fine. |

Main thing is that you are licensed and insured.
Just explain you just bought the bike and you're gonna got it MOT'd and Taxed soon as insurance docs come through.
Or words to that effect.

You may well not tell people what colour your new bike is.
I'll have you know young man that driving a vehicle without a tax disc is a very serious matter. Every time you drive a vehicle on the road without a tax disc you are defrauding the government of valuable money.
It may not seem like much to you my son, but what if that money was going to be used to buy me a shiny new truncheon and a new pea for my whistle? Didn't think of that did you?
It'll serve you right if someone drives past your house with a small number plate and I can't arrest them because my whistle doesn't work!
Rest assured I will be keeping a careful eye out in the Brighton area for any motorbikes, green or otherwise that have no tax disc on them. ____________________
