Qualities in a Second Hand Bike?

My stepdads work-mate, who has a CBR600 [how nice is that bike? Very Happy

] reccomended a place near me, so I went there today. I was greeted practically at the door, and it was a nice sexy female Wink

However, I digress.

After looking at their second hand bikes, I decided they dont really have anything old and cheap enough. They were in four figures, which I feel is a little steep.. they looked immaculate, so theres no way I'm going to get one from there - I'm bound to drop it atleast twice in the first week or two knowing me!

What things do I need to look out for and check when buying a second hand bike from adds? I'll be sure that all the paper work is in check so I'm not buying a nicked bike or anything, but I dont know the most common signs of wear and tear etc.

I'm after a 125 that looks a little sporty. A guy about 9 doors down has... an XR6? That bike is pretty sexy looking imo.

Ideally I'd get a slightly sporty looking 4t 125. Then when I turn 21, I'll be able to take my DAS and all hell may break loose in the loan department Very Happy

Any slightly sporty old-ish 125 4t's coming to your mind atm? Very Happy

Hmm an oldish 4t sporty 125, not sure to be honest mate. How old are you by the way? Have you considered getting your restricted liscence? I'm 17 and ride a restricted ZZR600, I was considering a 125 but then just decided to do my test so that I could get a bigger bike, up to you though mate Thumbs Up

I'm 19, 20 in december.

I want to get some experience in before I take my test. Only been riding once, and that wasnt really legally Razz

A mate let me try his 125, and after a huge session of faffing around with gears, managed to finally get it going and manouver around a car park with a little bit of 'style' Shocked

2000 to spend in total [on everything], and my predictions are I'll be spending most, if not more, than that Wink

Wish I was younger - then my parents might have chipped in.

Screw the 4t idea... I'll get what I like (Y) cant go wrong that way.

That checklist in the other thread has been awesome (Y)

Hey Ben,

4 Stroke is a great idea.. Looks like you have just enough money as well.. As a guidline this is what I spent:

Insurance: £250
Bike: £875
Monster Padlock and Chain: £100
Textile suit, boots, gloves, helmet: £540

And that was me sorted!

That leaves you £235 for a decent toolkit and some consumables! Smile

I'm not going above £900 for a bike (Y)

I live up in nottingham so going to see you would be a mission for me anyway.

If the price was right and conditions were better, I'd be tempted to have it off of you - as BCF members seem to all be sound and honest with their bikes (Y)
