Got caught about a year ago by one of these things.

Tonight, in rain I had to slam on, skidded slightly and just past the white line, I hate em.

It was bloody pi**ing it down and its a lot easier for a car to brake than a bike.

Its in a 40, it went to orange, when I was probably about 12 feet away, I would have been okay, as a car on the right passed me and he didn't get flashed.

Thing is I just brake like mad for em now.

Which has got to be dangerous.

I have never seen these traffic light cameras go off, and to be honest I don't know what they're main function is. From what I have heard they're meant to catch people who jump red?

Yes, they go off if you cross the line a short time after they turn red (maybe 0.5 seconds). I don't mind the idea of these cameras, since I don't fancy being wiped out by someone jumping a set of lights.

And it is also at the top of traffic lights usually in black of color. You can see it at the top (camera is black) facing the oncoming vehicles

gauloises, sometimes those cameras are actually how the phase works. Kinda like a better implemented version of teh roadwork lights.

<edit> the ones on top of the actual signal box </edit>

If I don't know the traffic light sequence and there's a camera visible then I'll slow down for them giving me ample time and space to stop should they change.

If you're gonna do a speed that isn't suitable for the road taking into account traffic calming measures/hazards and weather conditions then you're gonna get caught out, it's as simple as that.

wtf traffic light cameras, all the ones in my area do is make the lights turn green if they see head lights at a certain time of night! and that is a fact as i have tried it multiple times, i never knew they actually flashed you for going through them

I've nearly been caught out on these a couple of times (back when i was a learner :-p). The ones with the cameras always seem to be the ones that switch from green to red really really fast as if its trying to catch me out.

It was snowing, and I was going just under the limit (40mph), i was about 10 metres away, no cars about but the lights go orange and then red almost instantly, i hit the breaks (quite gently) but at this point im still a couple of metres infront of the line (but i think i'd already passed the sensor in the tarmark for the camera). The bike began to skid on the wet road, and I almost came to a stop in the middle of the junction but decided that i might as well go and just continued. I wasn't sure if the thing had flashed at me or not, but haven't heard anything since...

Since that night, I always move down gear and prepare to stop for any lights that im not sure about. If i've seen that they were just on red and have switched to green and have a rough idea of how long they stay on, I tend not to slow down, but if they're on green as im approaching i always presume that they're going to go red and get ready to stop.

When i did my driving lessons (not passed my car test yet :-p), my instructor told me that i should almost come to a stop at every green light just in case they turn red. Although I never see cars doing this, infact most people seem to speed up when they see amber (which is sometimes a lot safer than trying to stop...). But my bike instructor told me to just go for it, if it starts changing and you think you have enough time, just go as it's usualy safer.

Traffic lights suck... Most of the time they never switch to green for me as the sensors in the road just dont seem to trigger... my bike's quite heavy (about 170-180kg), so i either just go through red or turn around and find another way...

Traffic light cameras look like skinny gastos on top of the lights.

Bright yellow. Hard to miss.

There are traffic lights by my work that dont trigger a change for my bike. It can take up to 7 mins before it changes to green!

If a car pulls up it changes in the next sequence. Really Really shit.

It's to do with induction. There's not enough metal mass in your bike to generate enough of a current in the things under the road for it to sense you're there.

It's not about weight. So I suggest you wait for a car, roll over the line (assuming there's no camera) and get him to sit there, and the lights will change.

Cameras to catch people jumping red light cameras are not on top of the lights. They are set further back facing the lights and the back of cars and bikes. Bearing in mind that you are prosecuted on the photographic evidence, they have to fill all the criteria in the photo, ie, the car accross the line, with the lights on red, showing the car's reg number. If any of these aren't fulfilled, the evidence can quite easily be argued - "How does the photo prove i was crossing on a red light?" "How does the photo prove that it was my car?" etc.

The little things on top of the lights are to sense the level of traffic and either change the lights from red to green or adjust how long the signals take to change, they are an alternative to the induction loops under the road. they DON'T have the ability the catch red light jumpers. The cameras are normally covered in that day-glo crap like the gatso's.

If you were doing just under 40, coming up to a junction, in the snow and it was apparent you wouldn't be able to make an emergency stop, you were going too fast - it's that simple. You would get shafted if you went accross on a red in that situation, and you would deserve it. It's no different to following someone and the same distance as you would on a dry summers day and be suprise when you end up in their boot.

^^That isn't a dig at anyone in particular, but more the situation.

Traffic light cameras are a great idea IMO as they stop people thinking "it's only just changed, the others won't be on green yet" it takes the safety buffer away if people do that. if a car was going accross just after they changed to red and you had set off just as the lights changefrom red to yellow, it would probably take seconds for a thread along the lines of "Fucking cagers..." "Something should be done..."

You get busted on one of those, you deserve it. Deal with it.

you can be on the road (over the junction mark) at red aswell as amber think it's about 2 seconds maybe 3 before it'll flash. It's to stop people doing exactly that (breaking hard).

Yep, Grey around here too.

The lights at the top of a hill in doncaster won't change at 3 in the morning, even if there is an artic behind you. It's happenned twice, and both times after 10 minutes I'v just got fed up, and got of the bike and pressed the WAIT button for the pedestrian crossing. That made 'em change.

I have the same problem on 2 junctions on my way to work. One is the Sedgley Road West crossing the Birmingham New Road. And the other is at the top of Sedgley.

The latter I can avoid by making a turn before I get to it, but the former is a wait or chance it. I hardly ever chance it (unless its 5am in the morning and im in for 6, and even then, I check, double check then double check again. and still feel very unsafe gpoing) Ive got zero defence for going if I get pulled or knocked off.

Am I right in believing that the induction strips in the road work on magnetic force? If so, it shouldnt be too dificult to rig up a magnet w/ switch mounted on an outa the way position to change the lights for you. Might be worth looking into.

Ive also heard that there is a pressure pad that goes in sequence after the light goes RED, now sometimes a bike isnt heavy enough to trigger it, sometimes it is.
ive sat at some red lights for ages before because it wouldnt activate the pressure pad, untill a car comes along at least
