Hi all.

After selling my RGV for a nice profit, I've decided to sell my Bandit as well and go for something more sporty. Spent a while on the phone to Carole Nash earlier, asking if its possible and what sort of costs it'd be to transfer my insurance to a Gixxer6 or zx6r, "sorry, we're unable to offer a transfer for those vehicles due to your age." But to my surprise, I'm able to transfer my insurance across from the Bandit to an R6 (99/00) for free of charge, still fully comp as well! Very Happy

So after the weekend, Bandit is going up for sale to build up funds for a nice R6. I've just been around some dealers to take a look at the R6 and I've always loved it over the other two I've had my eye on, just didnt think I'd be able to afford one. Well I can, only just, and I'd just like some advice from people who know about these bikes.

Are there any problems or niggles with these bikes, especially the original 99 model? I'll be off to a few more dealers tomorrow to hopefully test ride one for myself and get a good feel of the bike. I've been told they're the most sporty of the lot, and I can understand that, but its exactly what I'm after. It'll just be my "everything" bike, from a mission to the shops or ride outs and track days. I've been looking at some online reviews and they're all rather positive. Not going to rush into buying one as I want to find the right bike.

Would appreciate it if some of you R6 owners could share your views on the bike, other than they look gorgeous and go like stink. Laughing

Tar,
Keith.

Hello mate, congrats on getting your R6 Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

All I can say is great bike.

I went out to buy a Gsxr6 but ended up getting an R6 because I found I could afford it. Well that was over a year ago now and I can tell you that the smile is as big as ever everytime I look at the bike let alone get on and ride it.

I have got a 2000 model R6 with quite high milage now (20,000 Due to work) and the only thing I have had to shell out on is a new rear tyre.

Lovely all round bike in my opinion. (but I would say That) lol

For me it's a terrible all round bike due to the riding position - which for me only really makes sense when being thrashed, preferably on track.

Look out for general abuse, so bearings/bushings, funny noises in the engine, etc etc. Well, all the usual stuff you should be looking at anyway Smile.

No major worries with them. Typically naff Yamaha gearbox quality, but you live with that (same on my old R1). Thrashed or higher mileage R6s can develop a 2nd gear problem where they jump out of gear when you give it the welly. Check for that, cos its big money to fix (so I've heard).

Expect some clutch basket/transmission noise when the bike's idling in neutral. It goes away when you pull the clutch in, and is nothing to worry about.

Other than that, they're generally extremely reliable bikes. Although I'm sure there are people out there with horror stories. But you get that with all bikes.

I've not owned one, but my cousin does. They're brilliant bikes if you can live with the focussed, sports-oriented riding position. And they shift when you pin the throttle!!!

Have I missed something? Laughing

I was considering the R6 as a new bike and heard plenty of good things about them from the dealership itself, but decided against it due to a few things, one of them being it'd make me extremely poor. Laughing Instead, I'm going to go for another RS125 which is what I planned to do before, use it as a track day and fun bike.

Will be looking into an R6 for next year, might as well get my use out of the Bandit. Thumbs Up

I would consider something with a bit more go for trackdays - if you get into it a bit you may start to get frustrated - well I did on a RS250, so definitely would have done on a 125.

However for starting out a 250 should be fine - I was more a fast group pace on the corners but in inters because of the general slower lap times.

I've recently sold my RGV250 which I planned to track but decided against it. I have a liking for single strokers due to their simplicity yet without costing a fortune to run. The RGV I bought was due pistons and rings replacement which would cost the best of £200 for parts, where as £200 will get me a full top end for a 125. Then theres the power valves, and the cost of a decent set of exhausts for it, everything is pretty much twice as expensive as a 125, engine wise anyway.

Will just enjoy a 125 for a while then upgrade to something a little bigger next year. Thumbs Up

Trying a few trackdays on a 125 shouldn't be a prob if you don't mind getting passed a fair bit.

However I wouldn't buy one for that express purpose.

Laughing I get passed a fair bit as it is.

If I buy this RS I went to see last night, I'll get a few track days done before winter sets in, but I'm also looking into racing for next year, in a formula 125 class. I'm a little old to start racing in 125's, but everyone needs to start somewhere, besides, its mainly for fun more than anything. Smile

I would definitely get some track experience before looking at racing.

Note, that from what I've seen, almost all the 125 racing (bar aprilia superteens) is on proper 'race' 125s.

We're talking GP bikes that weigh 90kg and make 40hp+.

A whole different ball game and pretty expensive.

If you're looking for something similar, I'd consider MZ racing - they make about 25hp as standard but should be a lot cheaper than GP 125 racing.

Hence the track days. Smile

The NEMCRC (which is the club I'd join) run a formula125 class which is for production bikes only, its also a small class of about 6 riders all of which run Aprilia RS125's. They also run the 125 GP separately, of which most ride the Honda RS125's and the odd Malaguti.

The F125 is for novice and young riders, its not too competitive and is more for fun than anything, a way to build up track experience. The NEMCRC only run at circuits local to the North East, mainly Croft, which is only down the road from myself so its not like I'd be travelling around the country going to Brands and the such. Smile

sounds like you have got it worked out, the RS125 is a great bike (i think you have one before from what i remember) but i think the only complaint i have is for group riding, i just cant keep up on the strights but thats no surprise for a 125 2 stroke. but then again if you going to use it to race other RS125's then defernetly buy one!
