PostPosted: 15:03 - 12 Aug 2005    Post subject: Slang Reply with quote

I thought I would try start a thread explaining biker slang to newbies, or just people that may not know any.

We could each write one instance and the next person carries it on, sorry if its been done before but I'm bored.

I'll start:

Lid = Helmet

'trick' or 'tricked out'

Used to describe a worthy motorcycle or accessory, so a bike with full ohlins would be 'tricked out'.

Tarty

Used to describe an unworthy motorcycle or accessory. IE one which provides no performance value, only cosmetic.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

chicken strips- unused bits of tyre indicating how far or not the bike has been leaned over

When going in a straight line, only the middle of the tyre is used, but when leaning the bike through a corner the edges of the tyre will also be used.

If a rider rarely leans there bike and does not lean far, they will have wide 'chicken-strips' with only the centre of the tyre tread being worn.

The rider is too 'chicken' to lean the bike.

Could you sit your bike on its centre stand, get somebody to give the engine a good thrashing while somebody else holds a piece of rock against the tire and wears it away :-p - Has anybody ever done this??

What about squid? I've seen it used on a few forums, mainly American, and it seems to describe the shorts/t-shirt 150mph brigade, but why squid?

Squids are known for being able to go really fast in a straight line, but can't turn for sh!t. I am sure you can see how this applies to some motorcycle riders Smile

knee down = this is where the rider leans over far enough so that there knee is touching the grond, i makes the corner faster as the bike is leaned over more and more stable as 3 points of contact with the ground instead of just 2 (front and rear wheel)

Helmet hair: Wearing a motorcycle helmet can lead to messy hair (if you have any). Removing the helmet usually leaves hair sticking out in all directions. This is called helmet hair. It can be minimized by use of special skull caps and liners that hold the hair in place.
