Until today, I had used Bridgestone tyres exclusively on my bikes, except for a brief deviation to Continentals when I was a poor student, which resulted in a couple of nasty accidents.

I've never had a problem with Bridgestone tyres, and so was reluctant to leave them.

Here are the old BT010's that were on my gixxer until about 30 minutes ago:
https://www.jonpascoe.co.uk/images/tyres/01.jpg

Now, Bridgestone have stopped producing their 010 tyres, replacing them with the 014 model. "What's the problem?" you ask! Well... whilst the 014 has better performance than the 010, it's durability is quite poor in comparison.
Since I do a reasonable amount of motorway miles to see my girlfriend, I decided that a set of 014's would be unsuitable.

What do I have instead? Shocked

I've decided to have a try with some Viper's, which are made by Avon.
They've had some decent reviews, and should provide slightly better performance than the 010, and should last a similar duration.

Since they were fitted, I've done 16.2 miles, and they're already reasonably well run in! Very Happy

Anybody used these tyres before? Any opinions on them?
I'll let you know how I get on with them after a couple of weeks or so.

Hmmmmm I was always under the impression that tyres needed 100 miles before they were worn in properly!! The only way to find out for sure is to take a pillion somewhere.......lets say the Bassetts pole....adn travel most of the way there on the back tyre!! Very Happy

I'm joking BTW, no wheelies, no stoppies!!!

Seriously, those tyres are worn in. After riding to work this morning, they've now done 30 miles, and I've taken it all the way to the edge of the rear tyre on the right hand side.

I always used to think it was 100 miles to wear your tyres in... but I've changed my mind now.

Have I never warned you about avons?

Whatever you do, under no circumstances when its even mildly cold or wet do not try leaning the bike! Shocked

Hmmm....

Well, with it being halfway through August, winter will soon hit (cos this country is shitty like that).
So, I'll be able to give you my opinion of them in the cold and wet. Confused

/edit - anyway, these Avon's are supposed to be different from the rest. Apparently they put lots of effort into making them a decent tyre.

Hmm... I'm rather fond of riding it though, so it tends to get dirty a bit quick.

Would rather be riding it than cleaning it.

Glad you've decided to try them out. I've been interested in them ever since their ad's started popping up in Bike. Do let us know how they perform with a couple hundred miles on 'em. By the time you're at that point, they might be availible here in the states. Thumbs Up

I have tried the Avon Azaro 3's but only because they was cheap at the time when I was skint. I usually stick to my 207gp's but thats getting difficult now as they've stopped making them. Sad

I've just put some pilot powers on my CBR and they're a lot smoother than the bridgestones I had on (bt14 front, 26 rear).

However, having scrubbed most of the tires off, i'm left with chicken strips on either side...any suggestions to get rid?

Im no wimp, but then I dont wanna end up sliding on my arse either...

How do you scrub the edges of the tires in?

Would be interested to hear how the tyres turn out - Have heard that, shock - horror, Avon may have actually made a decent road tyre!

I've been happy to get my knee down on someone else's bike within 5 miles of a new tyre - just lean progressively more and more.

As for the edge of tyre - do you really want to be leaning that much on a road? If you really want to lean that much, I'd get to a trackday.

It's best not to mix tyres as the profile's may be different. The 020 and 014 may though have the same profile though and if so, then it should be ok.

There's a 209GP out now, very sticky apparantly.

Supercorsas etc should be pretty similar.

PostPosted: 11:39 - 17 Aug 2005    Post subject: avon viper ! Reply with quote

IMHO Avon Vipers are total shit.We tried a set on a stock R6 +R1 .
Initial grip on the first few laps were exellent on both bikes.
After lap 14 the R1 shod bike started to move around under power, not enough to panic, just a little weave.
The R6 was still ok (ish !) but the heavy braking into the chicane was crap, it felt like the front would "wash" out , getting a bit un-nerving now Rolling Eyes
PM session : R1 out, after another 9 laps the back steps out BIG style Embarassed initail check over everthing seemed fine, out we go again.
2 more laps done,:A fist size piece of tyre seperates off the rear revealing the carcass, Sick
The R6 was checked over, nothing visible, re- checked pressures (again !)
Shocked gauge was 15 psi Twisted Evil Initial thoughs were its just a puncture or a dodgey valve___________________ NOT

We took off the front wheel , and put some air in. The easy way to check for a puncture is to spray the tyre with soap solution and water (you can see the little bubble appear)
NO bubbles on the tread Surprised BUT loads on the side- wall ( not leaking throught the rim ).
Pourous side wall Twisted Evil not good, this is something we hadnt seen for many years.

This report has also been sent to Avon, along with the tires we were given for apraisal.

I really would have been VERY pissed of if i had paid for them Evil or Very Mad

Circuit Llandow
Weather : Warm and mostly dry.
Bikes : stock R6 and streetstock 2003 R1

LAPS : r6 38 //// R1 58// circuit lenght 1 mile (ish)

I will post up the reply from Avon when the respond ;

Im well aware that we may have had a set of dogey ones but FFS what would have happened if the tire fell the rim , we shall wait and see !

IF they were any good at all you would see a load of racers at every level using them . i dont know any , do you Question Rolling Eyes

Crying or Very sad

Don't scare me Sad

I've done 100 miles on them now, and they've been great so far.

Took EDBANGER out on the back last night, and they were fine with a pillion.

Front didn't budge under heavy breaking.

Will see how things progress.
