 |
|
Until today, I had used Bridgestone tyres exclusively on my bikes, except for a brief deviation to Continentals when I was a poor student, which resulted in a couple of nasty accidents.
I've never had a problem with Bridgestone tyres, and so was reluctant to leave them.
Here are the old BT010's that were on my gixxer until about 30 minutes ago:

Now, Bridgestone have stopped producing their 010 tyres, replacing them with the 014 model. "What's the problem?" you ask! Well... whilst the 014 has better performance than the 010, it's durability is quite poor in comparison.
Since I do a reasonable amount of motorway miles to see my girlfriend, I decided that a set of 014's would be unsuitable.
What do I have instead?
I've decided to have a try with some Viper's, which are made by Avon.
They've had some decent reviews, and should provide slightly better performance than the 010, and should last a similar duration.
Since they were fitted, I've done 16.2 miles, and they're already reasonably well run in!

Anybody used these tyres before? Any opinions on them?
I'll let you know how I get on with them after a couple of weeks or so. |

Hmmmmm I was always under the impression that tyres needed 100 miles before they were worn in properly!! The only way to find out for sure is to take a pillion somewhere.......lets say the Bassetts pole....adn travel most of the way there on the back tyre!!
I'm joking BTW, no wheelies, no stoppies!!! |

Have I never warned you about avons?
Whatever you do, under no circumstances when its even mildly cold or wet do not try leaning the bike! |

Hmmm....
Well, with it being halfway through August, winter will soon hit (cos this country is shitty like that).
So, I'll be able to give you my opinion of them in the cold and wet.
/edit - anyway, these Avon's are supposed to be different from the rest. Apparently they put lots of effort into making them a decent tyre.

I have tried the Avon Azaro 3's but only because they was cheap at the time when I was skint. I usually stick to my 207gp's but thats getting difficult now as they've stopped making them. ____________________ 04 zx10r with mods - 187.4bhp at the wheel! :o |

IMHO Avon Vipers are total shit.We tried a set on a stock R6 +R1 .
Initial grip on the first few laps were exellent on both bikes.
After lap 14 the R1 shod bike started to move around under power, not enough to panic, just a little weave.
The R6 was still ok (ish !) but the heavy braking into the chicane was crap, it felt like the front would "wash" out , getting a bit un-nerving now
PM session : R1 out, after another 9 laps the back steps out BIG style initail check over everthing seemed fine, out we go again.
2 more laps done,:A fist size piece of tyre seperates off the rear revealing the carcass,
The R6 was checked over, nothing visible, re- checked pressures (again !)
gauge was 15 psi Initial thoughs were its just a puncture or a dodgey valve___________________ NOT
We took off the front wheel , and put some air in. The easy way to check for a puncture is to spray the tyre with soap solution and water (you can see the little bubble appear)
NO bubbles on the tread BUT loads on the side- wall ( not leaking throught the rim ).
Pourous side wall not good, this is something we hadnt seen for many years.
This report has also been sent to Avon, along with the tires we were given for apraisal.
I really would have been VERY pissed of if i had paid for them
Circuit Llandow
Weather : Warm and mostly dry.
Bikes : stock R6 and streetstock 2003 R1
LAPS : r6 38 //// R1 58// circuit lenght 1 mile (ish)
I will post up the reply from Avon when the respond ;
Im well aware that we may have had a set of dogey ones but FFS what would have happened if the tire fell the rim , we shall wait and see !
IF they were any good at all you would see a load of racers at every level using them . i dont know any , do you |

Don't scare me
I've done 100 miles on them now, and they've been great so far.
Took EDBANGER out on the back last night, and they were fine with a pillion.
Front didn't budge under heavy breaking.
Will see how things progress. |
