 |
|
Right. This is the situation...
Your riding along in the beautifull sunshine, your wearing just jeans and a t-shirt because its that hot and your not planning on going that far. Then out of nowhere... "OMG Oh goodness Gracious". The heavens open, your riding along, panicing (*sp?), "omg" you say, "What can i do?"... it gets worse, "Oh God NOOO!" you exclaim, your visor is misting up, you be thinking "Nooooooooooo". Are they tears? NO YOU IDIOT! THEY ARE RAINDROPS! POURING DOWN YOUR HELMET! "O-M-G" you proclaim at the top of your voice!...
Sorry i digress. So what do you do?
Place your vote... and then can someone actually provide a scientific answer? As to which would be the best thing to do in this situation, to allow you to escape this horrific situation with minimal wetness?...
Options:
A) Blast it home full throttle, screaming your way to your garage in the fastest time possible (Thus hitting the rain faster and it feeling like its raining more and more) Or...
B) Ride home slowly and casually, (Thus hitting the rain slower and maybe avoiding some of it as your riding slower? I dont know... feel less wet?)
(Ps. dont forget to try and add a scientific answer if you have one, as i seriously do wonder this from time to time)
(Pps. Yes you do have to ride home, you cant stop at a shop doorway or something because they dont have doorways anymore ) ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...

Ok,
Lets make this more simple.
If riding in the rain, would you get more wet riding fast or riding slow / normal.
There you go. Easy enough to answer? ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...

ride all the way home on your back wheel, that way the underside of the bike will protect you from the rain |

Or could stop, get off the bike, put on one piece rainsuit placed under the seat for just such an event and then proceed to ride home carefully because if it hasn't rained in a while the road will be more slippery plus you've all the car drivers sayin OMG it's raining and driving more erratically than they normally do.
Oh yes, and I agree, get your friends to give you a good slap for just wearing jeans and T-shirt. Mind you, you might enjoy that kind of thing ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

I must admit I would probably just take the B-road home and hope for some kind of tree canopy protection from the elements.

One thing you can be certain of however, is that whatever you do, it'll stop raining the moment you step in through your front door. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

If it's chucking it down and you blast home, you are more likely to have an accident, thus necessitating a longer time spent in the rain as you wait for a recovery truck. I'm sure there must be some kind of formula to work this out. However, I'm a bit rubbish at maths, so here are a few links which may prove of assistance:
https://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_395.html
https://www.mun.ca/univrel/gazette/1996-97/June.5/m-munsol.htm
Use this to calculate just how wet you would get:
https://www.dctech.com/physics/features/0600.php
Note that these links are all based on running vs walking in the rain, so don't take into account factors unique to riding a bike such as the shelter provided by the fairing/screen or the degree of protection offered by a rider's crouched position vs a walker's upright posture. |

I'd ride a tad slower than I usually would in the rain, because of the extra wind chill and the fact that it's just been nice and sunny so the rain is bringing the grease and crap up out of the road.
Or, I'd pull over and get my waterproofs out of my panniers, because this is England.
[edit] which is exactly what Map said, so slap me for not reading all the thread before replying ____________________ Current: CB500 Previous: CB100N, CB250RS, XJ900F, GT550, GPZ750R/1000RX, AJS M16, R100RT, Enfield Bullet

You will get wettter if you ride fast, it was on mythbusters if you run in rain you get wetter than if you walk.
Don't understand how that works but it does. |
