I need help to fix my brakes; I rode off tonight with a disc lock still on my front wheel and it hit the brake caliper quite hard.

Please don't laugh.

Now my front brakes don't work. There is no visible damage and no sign of leaking fluid, but the brake lever can be pulled right back to the handlebar and the brake doesn't operate. If I squeeze the lever 5 or 6 times it then works - but only once - and stops working again.

What do I need to do ? Please help I need to use the bike a lot this coming weekend !!

Ouch,

I did the same last week, I managed to hit the speed drive, but got a way with a £16 speed cable.

I think you are going to have to take your pads out of your caliper and see if they are actualy working, if there's movement in there etc.

Check for damage from there.

Have you checked your fluid level? Brake cable?

If not back brake it(slowly), to nearest garage.

Sounds like you're losing pressure somehow. Sure there's no leak?

I know this may be a bit late to advise. But have you thought of buying a little reminder cord. I have an Oxford flourescent yellow one that I hook around the lock and the ignition switch so it hits me as soon as I jump on the bike to remove my disc lock before I pull away.

I find the easier way to remind me is to put the disc lock bag over my ignition Very Happy

Unlucky mate, hope it isn't anything bad. Thumbs Up

Ouch, I did this on the first day of having my First bike DOH, luckily being an ickle newbie I didnt pull away very fast and everything was OK, then got a reminder cors which I hook round my handle bar so I cant hold the throttle without it getting in the way.

i always put mine on the back brake, then atleast if i drive off and fuck the back brake i have the front which are the most powerful. mabye consider writing on your tank "have you taken your disc lock off?"

Hope it isnt too expensive to fix Sad

If you can't see any obvious leaks then you could have cracked the caliper internally.

i liked the idea of a reminded cord but didnt want to be faffing around with that aswell as lock, key etc.

So now what i do is i leave the kill switch in the kill position if i put the lock on. This way, I physically cant start the bike without thinking why i left the bike with the kill switch like that, then i remember the lock Smile

Id take the bike to a garage, and pray they know what they are doing. I think I could cope if anything else went wrong while riding, but not the front brake.

Obviously when you know its not working, you can make do with the back brake, but i wdnt want to think its working and then reach for it and nothing happens one day.

Thanks everyone.

The bike is fixed now. I had to replace one of the brake discs as it had buckled and was pushing the pistons back.

It was bloody expensive ! Now I use my reminder cord. I won't stop locking my bike having had 3 nicked in the past. The thieves owe me a lot of money if I ever catch them.
