CBR 900 for a first big bike?

it will be restricted (i have an A2 licence)
its a 1999 model
for around £1100

It depends. You have to question yourself on your motives for wanting it.

There doesn't seem much point to me for a first bike. But if you can afford the insurance (probably as much as the bike) and you think you can handle it then you'll probably go for it no matter what anyone says.

Not sure how well it will take to being restricted though, unless of course you going to ride it illegally.

nah, dont intend to ride it illegally not enough experience for that just yet i dont think,

the insurance is free as my grandfather owns an insurance company, so that isnt a problem...



on another note anybody tell me how it will take to being restricted..

Ok it's a 900 Correct me if im wrong but wouldn't restricting it to 33BHP put allot of stress on the engine as it wants to pull you down the road faster than the restrictors let it?

I don't see how restricting it could do any engine good let lone a 900cc one.

I was just thinking on the fact that restricting the engine cant be too good for it and would put stress on the whole engine.

If it's done with carb restrictor plates then it's sort of like just not opening the throttle more than about 1/4 so it shouldn't do any harm.

I doubt it will run as well as an unrestriced one would because the restrictor will mess up the laminar air flow.

an older one would be reasonable to insure, but anything over 98 and worth over 3 grand will be alot.
i think because its called 'Fireblade'
like if you have a car thats 200bhp without a turbo is cheaper to insure than a 1.3 turbo because it says TURBO

Other point is that you mention it is £1100. That is VERY cheap for a 'blade. Suspiciously cheap. At that price I would expect it to be crashed or stolen.

And I really do not think a Fireblade makes a good bike for someone with next to no experience.

That does look the dogs bollocks does'nt it. Still, I'd also be suspicious of the price. If you do go for it make sure you get all the checks done that its HPI clear etc and maybe get someone you know who's mechanically minded to check over the bike if you're not into all that stuff.

Personally as a first bike at 17 I'd probably look for something a bit less powerful. If it was me at 17 with something like that I'd be tempted to use me right hand a wee bit too much ( ). Even with the ZX-6R I've just bought recently seems blisteringly quick.

i reckon you would have more fun on a restricted 400cc sports than a fireblade and unless you are built like a brick shithouse you are gonna struggle with the weight of a fireblade at 17!

About the bike I don't think its a good idea, get a 4/5/600 maybe.

Get a CBR400. Similar thing to the Fireblade, but a lot safer, lighter, easier to handle, much better for a 17 year old.

Inurance will still rape you, but it won't be as much.

And you can get them from £1000.

£1100 for that bike??? There is definitely something dodgey about that. They go for £3000 at least for a '99.

What possesses people to get a superbike at 17?

I know someone who restricted a slightly earlier model blade and he had problems with the plugs constantly fouling up and generally not running well.

If the bike really is legit, buy it and sell it on, then buy something that runs well restricted.

You want to go from a 125 Scooter to a 900 Superbike?

Now I know I ride a lowly RS50, but I have to say you are totally off you'r head!

Plus the gearing on the Blade will have been designed for 170mph so there will be less power in the 33bhp area, I'm not exactly sure, but wouldnt u only be able to use a few of the gears?

Get a 400 like I'm going to when I'm 17, they will be cheaper to run, and the powers more usable at 33bhp even if this is half their normal output.

And it'll still kick the asses of the chavved up boy racers cars (well maybe not the proper supras and skylines lol)!

Edit: Buy that and sell it on and buy a nice 400 and a bit of cash to spend
