Poor bloke, though I'm glad it sounds like he'll be okay.
Personally I don't have the need for a flip up lid so the benefits are too low.
They're noisier and not as safe - though I suspect in this case although it was flipped down maybe it wasn't slipped in to place?
I've never had one but I believe they have something like poppers on either side that should prevent it from flipping up - maybe due to the extra hassle he didn't click them in place? ____________________ Shaft drives rule. |

Yeah - flip lid helmets are supposed to be utter crap in accidents, I think they are looking into re-designing them or something like that. The guard just doesn't do a thing.
However - I can't live without mine. |

But would a full face helmet have been any better, or would he just have landed up with bits of chin-bar stuck in his face into the bargain?
Chances are, the energy dissapated in breaking the catch on the flip-up chinbar saved him from more serious injury.
Look at the chin-bar on your helmet. How big an impact do you realistically think that will sustain given how it is mostly made of polystyrene with a thin composite covering? How fast is an R1 Going after 30 yards? ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Just to put the other side, for balance, I was wearing a Caberg Justissimo flip up helmet when I had my accident.
I was so impressed with it that I replaced it with a Caberg Justissimo.

My Italian branded Nava gold stamped lid which was £385 came off during a crash as the side of the lid hit a van it became oval shaped and the D lock did nothing but cut my chin! ____________________ 05 ZX10R, (**05 WKR) |

there always one contradiction to everyone else! the crews i spoke to were from a "proper" ambulance (you know, a van thing)
still like i say it is personal choice thing (your head after all) just that they aint as safe from what i heard, but obviously there are exceptions to the rule like sadies caberg justimo where they perform well.
