After standing and talking to my manager and gud biking buddy at work and admiring his beautiful R1 ( cant remember ther year) with fully polished frame wheels and chrome and blck paint work.

I watch him set off and go the total of 30yrds before some twat in a white van turns right straight across him he hit the van broadside and stopped instantly. The bike sustained bent forks buckled wheel and the usual smashed fairings and screen ( a right -off) but wat really scared me is the fact he was wearing a flip face helmet and as he hit the van the visor flipped up allowing his face to strike the van breaking his nose and ripping his face open. I've just bought a similar helmet (airroh) and am seriously thinking about returning it and getting a conventional full face helmet.

as for the van driver he admitted fault to the police and to ma mate so we'll see wat the outcome is.

Are you meant to scrape knee slides or rip them clean off?

Returning the helmet? Unless it's faulty, forget it.

My brother saw the exact same thing happen earlier this year but he had an open faced helmet on a R1 street fighter.

Not nice.

Poor bloke, though I'm glad it sounds like he'll be okay.
Personally I don't have the need for a flip up lid so the benefits are too low.
They're noisier and not as safe - though I suspect in this case although it was flipped down maybe it wasn't slipped in to place?

I've never had one but I believe they have something like poppers on either side that should prevent it from flipping up - maybe due to the extra hassle he didn't click them in place?

Yeah - flip lid helmets are supposed to be utter crap in accidents, I think they are looking into re-designing them or something like that. The guard just doesn't do a thing.

However - I can't live without mine. Thumbs Up Wink

Sorry to hear about the accident.

I very much doubt that you will be able to return the helmet.

Shit sounds nasty, hope his nose and other bits are o.k, looks like he should be ok insurance wise, just a major pain in the arse!

OT: yeah, heaven knows how your "ride to BJ service" would be able to function otherwise, you would loose so much money in the time taken to get the helmet off! Laughing

But would a full face helmet have been any better, or would he just have landed up with bits of chin-bar stuck in his face into the bargain?

Chances are, the energy dissapated in breaking the catch on the flip-up chinbar saved him from more serious injury.

Look at the chin-bar on your helmet. How big an impact do you realistically think that will sustain given how it is mostly made of polystyrene with a thin composite covering? How fast is an R1 Going after 30 yards?

however, for safety reasons it is normally stated that this not apply to helmets, either verbally at the counter, or on the receipt, or even on the wall or somewhere. down to safety issues, no shop will take a helmet back. whether this is correct morally or not is open to debate.

sorry to hear about the crash, was speaking to a coupl eof ambulance crews about lids. they say do not get open or flip face lids. cos they are rubbish and fall apart in accidents.

although it is your choice, please remember why you buy a lid.... to protect your head.

i figure that due to the nature of there job they don't want to waste time taking off a helmet.

Just to put the other side, for balance, I was wearing a Caberg Justissimo flip up helmet when I had my accident.

I was so impressed with it that I replaced it with a Caberg Justissimo.

Thumbs Up

My Italian branded Nava gold stamped lid which was £385 came off during a crash as the side of the lid hit a van it became oval shaped and the D lock did nothing but cut my chin!

well from all the banter all i can think is,

Manufacturers have got the impact and energy absorbtion sussed and are well on their way to sorting out the penetration side ( no funny jokes i know its hard wat with the words helmet and penetration around) All they need to do now is stop cuts and other wounds happening to the face, head and throat due to the helmet.

there always one contradiction to everyone else! the crews i spoke to were from a "proper" ambulance (you know, a van thing)
still like i say it is personal choice thing (your head after all) just that they aint as safe from what i heard, but obviously there are exceptions to the rule like sadies caberg justimo where they perform well.

Yeah, the Caberg Justissimo rated 9/10 in tests and scored the highest rating of any flip front lid. Nice to know.
